Our founder Patrick is an avid waterman who, before dog gear, he was designing white water kayak gear. Needless to say, he knows a little about what it takes to stay afloat. You can see his expertise reflected in every version of Ruffwear life jackets (since the late 1990's), including the one we offer today, our K-9 Float Coat.
Flotation is achieved via several layers of closed-cell foam - instead of one thick one. This allows us to sculpt a shape that enhances comfort, doesn't impede movement, and promotes the ideal, horizontal canine swimming position. Belly panel foam boosts underside flotation. For optimal safety and fit, the fully-connected, telescoping collar ensures the jacket stays in place even after long sessions of dock jumping or frolicking in the surf. Buckles are protected and straps have tail keepers: everything is streamlined so there's less to dangle or snag.

Great!
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
We have one dog who loves to swim with or without the coat, and my 9 month old is just learning, and a little nervous as to where the steps to the pool are, so the coats have been great! Brady has been able to swim longer (read: Tired, exercised, well behaved pup), and we (And Fitz) have the confidence that he will not drown, while learning how to find the steps in the pool.
With the pavement getting hotter, walks are less frequent, to protect their paws, so the coats have allowed us to have another way to exercise them!
The coats themselves are durable, the handles allow us to pull them out of the pool, without hurting them or the coat, and it is easy to adjust. They wear the same size, but are built differently, so the coat adjusts well to their unique build.
Definitely worth the money!

I no longer have to worry about my dogs not getting back to shore when we are at the ocean or the river. The fit is great and if I have to run in and get them, I feel secure in picking either one of them up out of the water by the handle.

The only review of a dog that wrote that the jacket didn't fit was a dog shaped like ours. She's about knee height, 50 lbs barrel chested. Having another strap toward the back, and maybe a second handle there would have been good. We had to return the life vest and found a much better one for less than half the price.

We are on the water all summer. Dogs can swim but need something for out on open water and when we run the motor. Fit great, dogs can move in them well. Most of all they work. Every once in awhile one goes for a swim without permission. Great peace of mind.

This product is too tight around my dogs neck, yet so wide around the neck that her chest pushes it into her head. Obviously too small for her shoulders as well. Not holding out hope for the larger size because the strap around my dogs neck is already too wide.

Great, of course!
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
I’ve had the flotation vest for over ten years—which came with a “free” stuffed star toy that Ruffwear made at the time from leftovers.
I got mine because Haven got startled by hunters once and ran into the water and started swimming across the Channel toward Dover. Ruffwear products are ABSOLUTELY GREAT. The vest is extremely durable and has a top handle that was fantastic for hauling huge Tommy around when I was trying to keep weight off his front leg when he developed bone cancer. Although these vest are by no means designed for stress on the bottom clips caused by being pulled upward by the handle out of water, the vest stood up to months of this and it's still as good as new. The star toy’s been through many dogs and has been torn open in spots and still never collapsed.

Italian Greyhounds are not swimming dogs, but they will jump off into the abyss without hesitation. So We put these on our dogs when boating in the gulf. Again, a great pick-up handle make its easy to lift little dogs in and out of a boat. These are a must for boaters with dogs without fear.

I bought this vest thinking I could use the handle to pick up my 60lb lab from the water from inside the boat. It's possible but a bit of a challenge cause there's not enough underneath support, mainly just her chest area. I can still use it but in case anyone is wondering. There you have it.

Simba is not to fond of the water, but he is only 8 months old. He is now standup paddling with us and we feel really at ease with his new Ruff Wear life jacket. We also take him dinghy sailing and his jacket allows him to move about the dinghy freely. We would definately recommend Ruff Wear to dog owners whose dogs are around the water.

The best sporting vest ever
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
Bo is a very large dog 95lbs lean and tall. This vest fits him perfect for his Extreme Vertical Competitions. He jumps 8 feet in the air off a dock to retrieve a bumber that is hanging. The vest does not constrict him and supports him on his landing into the water so he bounces up quickly without hiting bottom of the pool.

Excellent
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
Fritz has arthritis in his back legs and it was recommended that he get involved in hydrotherapy and laser treatment. Because we also have a pool, they recommended that we purchase a vest so that he can float and "paddle." I am so impressed with the vest and how much he loves getting his vest on and getting in the pool with it. One month ago, he could barely walk but now, after swimming in the pool every day and laser treatments, he is walking so much that we have trouble keeping track of him - AND he is 16 years young! I love that this vest has given him a longer opportunity in our pool which we hope to keep open at least until November (fingers crossed). Thank you!

My canine companion(s): Labrador and Maltese
Highly functional, sturdy, dependable.
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
Initially, there was some concern that our dogs could wiggle out of their vest, but both of them took to the vest without hesitation and with proper adjustments, both vests fit perfectly. We were very impressed and pleased with the quality of the vests. Biscuit’s Float Coat was purchased for two purposes; safety and to help in her physical therapy. Biscuit has a weak hind leg due to a damaged ACL. Her veterinarian recommended swimming to strengthen the leg. The Float Coat helped with her buoyancy and she spent more than her usual time in the water! The Float Coat turned out to be a life saver on this vacation, too. After swimming around our boat a few times, we realized how difficult it would be to get Biscuit (at 70 lbs) back into the boat. Well, the sturdy handle on the vest proved its worth! My husband grabbed the handle and we managed to get her back on the boat without any mishap. Yeah!

Excellent
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
Everything I have gotten from Ruffwear has been great. My Staffie is a rescue, and his left rear leg doesn't bend after a serious injury. He is also very dense and sinks quickly. I have a pool in my backyard and he loves to use it to cool off but is afraid of swimming. He also has fallen in a few times. This will give me and him peace of mind and give me some time to teach him how to successfully get out if he falls in. The bright yellow is STUNNING on him!

Date of Review: 9/18/2012
We kick up our paws in: NJ
My canine companion(s): Husky Mix
Excellent
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
Elly is not a swimmer, she will occasionally do a very short paddle in calm water with the proper motivation. But, I recently purchased a canoe and needed a way to keep her safe should we tip. This is was the best product I could find. The handle is sturdy enough to support her whole weight. Elly can run, jump, sit, etc. with the coat on, no problem. It is easy to adjust and has velcro to keep the loose ends secure. Elly was wary of the Float Coat at first, but after 5 minutes of treats and a little training she enjoys wearing it. She can easily move about the canoe, test the water conditions and scour the water for sticks and feathers without me having to worry about her falling out.
Note: Because Elly was at the exact measurement border between small and medium, I contacted Ruffwear for advice. The customer service rep was quick to respond and make a recommendation on size which worked out perfectly!

My canine companion(s): English Setter, Gordon Setter
Winnie loves it
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
I knew Winnie loved the life jacket when I saw her paddling with her front feet, and dragging her back feet, while waiting for the retriever toy to fly over her head. She's a Gordon Setter with the heart of a retriever. She loves to be wet and have sticks thrown for her. She also has bad hips, and a day at the beach usually leaves her limping the next day. But the life jacket allowed her to be comfortable and she only had to focus on paddling. It supported her head and body perfectly and she didn't want to get out of the water. It does just what I wanted from it, and it will last a very long time. Winnie gets excited as soon as it comes out of the closet now!

Ruffwear is the only brand I could find in a 3/4 length instead of a full. My pupps last life jacket was to long and made his rear end float to high in the water & would make his face sit to low. This jacket is a much better fit and gives my pupps allot more confidence in the water. My pupps like to swim in high Mt. lakes when we go hiking. It is light wieght & dries quickly. I like the yellow color for good visability

Very impressed with the product as well as the quick service. Fits perfectly, material and workmanship *A-1*.
Paris loves it, as soon as I pick it up he extends his neck for it and as soon as we finish the 2nd snap he runs to the boat. The coat doesn't impair him at all. We could leave it on him all day and he wouldn't mind.
As far as performance goes it's terriffic . He weighs 75 lbs and this has brought his whole back out of the water. He loved the water before but now he like a little kid and wishes to stay in far longer.

Amazing!

At first I was skeptical about a life jacket for a dog that could already swim with no problem but this Float Coat is amazing! My dog was instantly more confident and less afraid to jump in. It really kept his head out of the water. The handle is great to lift him back onto the shore and he is highly visible in the semi murky water. Excellent product. I was shocked at how good it was, how easy it is to put on, and how light it is. It didn't weigh him down at all. There will be many more trips to the lake with our Float Coat and once the puppy is big enough he'll have his own too!

The new design of the float coat is wonderful. Chaos and Mayhem may not have appreciated the streamlined and adjustable neck opening but I know they loved a bit of extra help up the river bank's rocks from the sturdy handle after a long day of playing in the river. Even though Chaos measured at 32" and Mayhem a 30" I went with a large for 72lb Chaos and a medium for 55lb Mayhem. The golden's barrel chest is tough to fit and each of the boys look handsome and performed well in their new jacket.

My girl is 200lbs (not overweight) and her chest size is just the upper limit listed by Ruff wear for the XL vest. This has helped us so much in the pool. We enjoy canoeing our local stream, the Mad River. Max is now 6 years old and doesn't have the stamina or strength he once did. We looked at several different life vests when we took a chance on RuffWear. The K-9 float coat sounded as though it was built well and had nothing but good reviews. We were concerned because we weren't able to find one locally to view. However, when we received it... it fit perfectly and was everything that we were looking for; durable, functional, well fitting and aesthetic. It took a few times for Max to get comfortable putting it on but now, he looks forward to it! I can't recommend this enough!!!

Brita is a powerful swimmer and after watching her launch at full tilt off the dock, I fully expect her to do the same off the boat in the middle of the lake. We were most interested in the stout handle on the vest to bring her back onboard. Haven't used it yet but if we need it, I know we'll be able to easily retrieve the Retriever!

I purchased the K-9 Float Coat for my chocolate lab, Bella. The medium size fit her just perfect with room for her to grow as the straps can extend a few more inches. It seems very durable and we have used the strap on top several times to lift her out of the water.

As those who have said before us, this is the absolute best dog life jacket on the market. Ruff Wear truly outshines the competition with the K9 Float Coat through attention to detail and thoughtful design. The ergonomic nature and proper placement of floatation in this Float Coat has our once water-shy dog swimming like a fish! Give your design crew a well-deserved pat on the back...they've earned it!

Stitching on this product is heavy duty. I have an 18 month old female GSDthat weighs 75 pound that does Search and Rescue. She is required to wear a PFD everytime we are on a boat or working near the water. This works great. I can even lift her if needed due to the heavy construction of the coat.

GREAT!
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
The float coat is very heavy duty and my pup seems very comfortable in it. I bought it because I hope to take him to a lake sometimes and also to use it while teaching him to swim. He is afraid of the pool now and goes in a lake or river, but is scared to swim. I bought the Yellow one so I could easily seem him in dark body of water and also I thought it would be cooler since a light color. Well worth the money.

My GSD has a degenerating spinal cord and cannot stand or walk anylonger. At the therapy swimming pool he goes to they used RuffWear life jackets and I was amazed that he can move his hind legs like normal while swimming and even stand in the water on his legs. I bought a life jacket for the summertime since we go to the lake quite often. These jackets are the best out there as they have floatation over and under under the dog, and around the neck to keep their faces out of the water. This life jacket is a lifesaver for my dog as he gets the exercise for his hind muscles. Also putting it on and off is a breeze and the handle and clip at the top are great. It drys quickly too. A well made product and I can't say enough good things about it.

This is Bailey's second one. We really like the redesign without the velcro and buckle in the front neck. It gives her so much confidence. Would never buy another brand, even though we think they are a little expensive. Great product!

Best Life Jacket on the Market!
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
We love the K-9 Float Coat by Ruff Wear! the coat has great adjust-ability, which is wonderful for my growing puppy! The strap system is easy to adjust and stays out of the way, not interfering with movement in any way!
I love the handle! Its wide and durable! The handle is great for lifting your pup on and off of boats, docks, etc.
I love the leash and beacon attachment points and use them frequently! I do wish that the leash attachment point was in front of the handle or on top of it...the location is confusing to me.
The reflective trim is great in combination with the Beacon. I do wish the jacket came in a color other than red or yellow. The yellow is easy to see, I wish there was another bright color in case of "dog overboard", perhaps a lime green or orange?
The material seems very high quality and insanely durable! I've been very happy with it so far.
The only improvement I can think of would be some sort of neoprene type material on the front and under the belly to prevent chaffing.
The fit is great and by far the best I've found!

Blew my mind!
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
I have a 1 year old Rottweiler named Tate. He loves nothing more than playing in the water, unfortunately he lacked the swimming prowess his labrador pals had when we take them swimming in the ponds at my farm. At 100 pounds I was very worried that he would fearlessly swim out to the middle and sink like a rock.
I purchased the K-9 Float Coat after reading all of the good reviews and comparing it to others. When it came in I thought it looked awesome but I still had my doubts solely due to Tates large size and weight. A quick trip to the pond erased all those doubts! Tate is now a smimming machine! He outlasted all his so called 'water dog' friends and even us humans, he swam nonstop for hours without a problem (he did of course sleep the entire next day). I even have noticed that his swimming without the float coat on has improved which is an added bonus. GREAT PRODUCT

We purchased the Small when our dog was a pup and he progressed into the Medium and he is now a 44lb dog. Initially we used this as a buoyancy aid for physiotherapy. It worked a treat. It has been so effective in keeping him high in the water and allowing range of motion of his limbs without restriction. 10/10. He is the coolest doggie on the beach and as Veterinarians we recommend the coat to all of our clients if they are needing buoyancy for physio or simply added support when at the beach.

Roxy is a 4 year old lab who loves to go fishing for dolphin(mahi mahi). We go out in the ocean and sometimes it can get very ruff. So, we needed a life jacket for her. Also, When she jumps out of the boat while we go swimming it's hard to get a 75 pound dog back in the boat without using her collar. With this jacket we are able to get her inside the boat without hurting her or struggling. she loves her jacket it's comfortable where she sits and lays down with no problem. I highly suggest it

I bought the Medium for my 45lb mutt in case he gets knocked off the boat when we go sailing. He is a strong swimmer and won't swim with this on (he is fussy about wearing things,) so I don't use it for canoeing or swimming near shore. But I wanted him to be safe when sailing in the sound. He walks well in the coat and it seems comfortable. It fits well and seems well-designed and rugged.
