We had this leash for about 4 days before it was broken. My doodle loves to hold her leash in her mouth and carry it around.... well she did just that, and the leash was quickly torn. No tugging or pulling, literally just holding it. The Knot-A-Leash has held up much better for us.

This is by far one of my favorite leashes. The handle is comfortable and you can attach a bag dispenser to it easily. It's a soft leash that's flexible along with being attractive. I also really like the clasp and the extra handle towards the bottom.

I love the flat out leash! We have two and use them often for camping- great to tether to a tree or pic-nic table, easy to wear as a waist leash, and works awesome as a regular ordinary leash too. When needed I can use. Both ends if I need to control two dogs in a hurry.

This is our second flat out leash. I love the "traffic" handle. When we run its nice to use around my waist. My only complaint about the first one was the clip. Sometimes when Peanut would shake it would unclip but the new Talon clip is great! This is the best everyday/ all around leash!

Love the bright colors and the soft grip handle, as well as the traffic handle. So far we have had not problems with the leashes, though they seem to be thin and we are not sure how long they will actually last. It would be nice if the traffic handle had a little padding.....

Love it but..
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
Riley is a service dog so this leash is pretty much attached to her all the time.. I love that I can adjust it to go across my chest or around my waist. The only thing I would change is make the side release buckle out of metal so it is more durable. The plastic broke and I had to jimmy rig it with a carabiner. Otherwise, this is my favorite leash on the market.

My canine companion(s): German Shepherd
Great
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
I have both the older version and the newer version of this leash. I love everything about it except for the new talon clip. If my German Shepherd pulls to either side, the clip can open and he gets loose. This is a real safety issue. I never had problems with the clip on the older version.
I love the leash because it is lightweight and durable. The handle is great because it's really easy to hook Bailey to a picnic bench or pole while my hands are busy or while we take a break. When we are hiking I can hook the leash to my hip belt and walk hands free.
The traffic handle is excellent, but be very careful using the traffic handle in conjunction with the new clip. We were downtown last weekend and I got Bailey by the traffic handle and held him as we passed another dog. As he stretched his nose out to sniff the other dog, the clip came open and he got off leash. He could very easily have run out into traffic or gotten into a fight with the other dog. Thankfully nothing happened, but it gave me a heart attack. My husband is going to saw off the talon clip and we are going to replace it with a locking carabiner.

Good.
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
Nice leash. Would have liked the little loop to be a few inches longer...maybe about 3. A little extra length to grip and hold when he barks would have been nice. I also would have liked the clasp to be locking, as he broke loose of a previous leash and he was gone for 3 days. Maybe the carbiner from the knot-a-leash on this would be perfect, with a little extra length for the grip.

Great design, lightweight!
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
I really like the flat out leash and it's design. It is nice and easy to clip onto her collar. I have had it for amost a year now and it is still holding up well, although the material is freying a bit. Now that we live in the city, I use it a lot more. The only thing I don't like about it is I find it very hard to hold onto halfway down the lead when it is wet because the material is quite thin, which is all the time on the coast. I think this wouldn't be as big of a problem in a drier climate with a dog that isn't an extreme tugger.

Can't say how much I love this leash! Whether it be out jogging or out in the backcountry with my lab. Yes, when I tie the leash around my waist my dog has less than 6' to roam, but when I'm jogging shes at my side anyways so no worries there. If I want her roaming around I just use my retractable leash.....

Leash total length is 6 foot. Factory size of belt is about big enough for a toddler. Not a big person, adjusting the belt to fit around my wait (about 35") made my dog have a 3 foot leash. I bought this in the first place BECAUSE it was 6 foot long. Clasp sucks.

Very nice!
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
I'm on my third iteration of this leash (the first one had the old style snap, which sheared off after a year or two. The second was destroyed when I learned my new dog was a very spirited chewer, whoops!). I've used this leash every time I go hiking or traveling. I love that I can go hands free with it clipped around my waist. Their padded handhold is a nice bonus, too.
The only drawback is that when around my waist, the leash length is rather short. I've compensated by clipping it to a second 6' leash with a D-ring at the handle-end to extend it out.
The snap is very sturdy, but a bit on the heavy and bulky side. I had to replace my dog's previous collar, because the leash clip on the latest version was too large for the collar's D-ring. But, even after being drug through desert sand, mountain snow, ocean water, and rocky gravel, it still functions perfectly.
While I don't tend to use it for my everyday leash (I prefer to keep it for travel and hiking), I have taken this leash on plenty of trips, too, including a road trip from Florida to California and on hiking trips in the Sierra Nevadas. It's an essential item that I keep in my car to have handy wherever we go. I highly recommend it!

I hike a lot with my rescue. I like the short leash control for passing folks on the trail or for controlling her on steep descents so as not to be dragged down the trail. I've also noticed that she does not get tangled up in this leash at all with the pivoting head on the clasp.

I have the older version of this leash with a snap clip but either way this leash is amazing. My dog is a service dog in training and this leash is awesome for walking in crowds when I dot have use of my hands, I just clip this around my waist slide the keeper making the leash shorter or longer(note: the keeper will not keep your dog from pulling the extra leash out, my dog is trained to heel and not pull that is why I slide it al the way around my waist and keep it neat and not floppy. The traffic control loop is also nice. Unlike many other leashes which the control handles stick out and add weight, this one is very discreet an you would not be able to see it unless it is being used

Great product!!
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
Kona is an 11 month old Belgian Shepherd mix, 50 lbs. He’s now had his leash 7 months and I have no real complaints! It is used every single day all day long.
Some others have stated they wished it came in various lengths so that when worn around the waist there was still more than 3 feet to the dog, I wish this was the case also. He heals very well which means the leash doesn’t drag but it’s still slightly annoying that there isn’t much distance between us especially when he wants to take a potty break and I’m RIGHT next to him ;-)
The color (red) has held up great, no fading at all. He’s started the nasty habit of picking the leash up in his mouth and tugging, which we are working on, the leash has held up even with that. The padding on the handle is really great and makes it comfortable to hold in my hand, the buckles have all help up under aggressive use, and the webbing isn’t frayed one bit. Great product!!
(I wish the collar we got came in orange to match the orange leash, I had wanted that color originally!! But the red is my close second.)

I have a young, very energetic German Shepherd I am training to be a working dog in the Wilderness. I put a carabiner on the back of my pack and hooked his new leash into to it. Dogs should not run free in grizzly country and can bring bears back to their owners. So my dog hikes behind me. This leash is very stout, sturdy, and easy to handle. I like the hardware that hooks onto his collar. I would recommend this leash for big, energetic dogs.

I don't usually write reviews but I have to say that I love this product. I tried running with my dog with a regular leash and because my dog is a puller I would feel like my arm got more of a work out that My legs did from running. I can run with her and it makes it so much easier that my core is in control. The down side it is a little long, but they make it this way incase the person is using it as a belt is a larger person.

Very good leashes, sturdy construction - do not hurt the hands. I have two large female pit bulls and I'm in the process of training them - they can be aggressive and lunge at various things. This leash does not cut into the hands, offers a very secure grip and comfort. The reflective abilities are good. Overall construction is excellent, likeability and useability is excellent, strength of leash and hardware on the leash is FANTASTIC.

So-so
Would you recommend this product?.: No
Since my dog is small/medium, the weight of the leash is good. However, the clip is really very heavy. I bought the leash for the handle that will open, and that is great. Even though I have tied several knots in the leash, it's still too long and drags on the ground. I hope it doesn't wear out because of that. Since my dog is short, the traffic option is of no use. It is the only one I could find with the handle like this, though, and that makes it worth it.

My only improvement would be a little bit tougher for chewing. The puppies are 9 months old, and will once in awhile chew them. I've had them restitched, because they are such great leashes and soooo comfortable in your hands

nice product overall. could be more durable
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
I was looking for a leash with a loop handle next to the dog's collar. My dog is prone to bursts of exciteability so I wanted the additional control. This leash has very nice features in a very simple design. The buckle/loop on the people end of the leash is easy to use as an impromtu tiedown. My only complaint is that it is not a very thick leash, and I am sure that many dogs would chew through this material in a couple of minutes if inclined. So not a great plan A as a tiedown which is a shame as it is such a nice feature.

I bought the first generation of the flat-out leash three years ago. The Beast and I loved and used the good gravy out of that leash for its versatility, long length, and quality. A month or so ago, I bought a flat out leash. I was so pleased to see the second generation is even better built, and has some exellent hardware improvements. I loved Ruffwear the first time, and I'm even happier with this purchase!

Can't do without!
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
This leash is great for hands free walking with a leashed dog. It is light weight yet strong. The light weight is especially great if you walk a senior with orthopedic issues, and any well trained and well behaved dog. I have two of these leashes in use, the first one for something like eight years. My only wish would also be that it'd be available in a shorter length, to reduce the slack of a dog that is walking by my side. It's a bit of a hazard for tripping for a senior, and we don't need the slack. No leash is suitable for all dogs in all situations. If a dog is a chewer, don't tie him up with any nylon leash. If you want a long line, don't get a 6' leash and expect it to be 20'. If you want a light weight yet sturdy 6' leash, with a traffic lead loop, that allows you to walk your dog hands free, this is it.

I WAS PLEASED WITH THE PRODUCT, HOWEVER I WOULD HAV LIKED A THICKER WEBBING. MY DOG IS BIG AND THE THIKER MATERIAL WOULD JUST MAKE ME FEEL BETTER AND MORE SECURE. HOWEVER, THE BUCKLES WERE NOT VERY GOOD AT ALL. I WAS WEARING THE LEASH AROUND MY WAIST, AND AJAX TOOK OFF AFTER ANOTHER DOG. THE LEASH HELD BUT I HEAARD A SNAP. THE PLASTIC BUCKLE SNAPPED WHERE THE WEBBING FED THROUGH THE BUCKLE. THE BUCKLE DID NOT DISENGAGE, BUT IT WAS BROKEN.

I was looking for a good leash to use when Indy and I go for runs and this one is just what I was looking for. I love the handle for crossing intersections. Indy loves the leash and the talon clip makes it easy to attach it to him when he's overly excited for a run. I like the padding for the waist part of the leash, but I do wish there was more of it because it doesn't reach all the way around the waist. Overall it's a great product for both dog and human runners.

was excited , then dissappointed
Would you recommend this product?.: No
I saw this product on my dog trainer. I thought it was great. I got one. I brought it home, loosened the waist tie to fit me. I have a 32 inch wasit - average by all accounts. After fitting the band around my waist the remaining amount of leash was less then 30 inches. That is not even three feet. Contrarry to most reviews I find that the leash is far too short for a good walk. I realized I could do what I was looking for by looping a 20 ft lead though my belt buckle loops and have far more leash for far less expense. I think you would be covered if you offered different lengths in this leash to fit all needs. If the remaining leash had been closer to five feet I would not have been dissappointed and felt the need to return it . Also this makes my first experience with your company a negitive one, not a good thing if you want return customers. I am very surprised to find that other people did not find issue with the remaining lenght of what becomes the actual leash. I was more then ready to love this product and your company. I am very dissapointed that this was not a positive experience.

Awesome Product!!

What a difference using this leash on my runs with Tessa has made!! My only "complaint" is that I wish the leash was just a little shorter. My Tessa stays right by my side so there is a lot of slack. I just tied a couple of knots in it and it fixed the problem. Don't know why so many people commented on how the leash was easily chewed through... don't let your dog chew on the leash and all will be well :-) Tessa now knows the difference between this leash and her other leash and gets excited when she knows her and Mom are going running. Thank you Ruff Wear!!!!

I have had to buy a new leash every 6 months one for the winter and one for the summer due to the material this leash is made of in the winter it simply falls apart after wear n tear however in the summer it seems to last more until washed it begins to look nasty n brittle. Due to to washing again I have bought this for the past 3 years material wise it needs to be stronger as a wear and tear my dog who's 95lbs breaks it surfing winter months by simply pullying I give it a 4 star rating simply tobthat fact other than that a great leash for running walking or a quick tie up etc ty for reading: )

My 2yr old Shepherd mix loves to run. This leash makes it much easier to run with him balanced, not having him pulling on one arm. I think, tied to my trunk, I have more control, and less impact from his periodic attention deficits.
The thinness of the fabric does worry me. Pulling will def not damage it, but I am afraid any damage may cause a tear. Maybe stress test data on the website can prove that to be unneeded worry.
Well worth the price.

This leash is great. Nit picking at it, the only two issues I could have would be that when it's around my waist it will slip, if I have it with the buckle on my left side, a little pulling will pull it to the front or back. The clip is really nice, it takes a little getting used to using it quickly, I like it much better than standard clips though.

We've had this leash for a few weeks now and we like it a ton except for the durability which I'll get to in a moment. The leash seems well made, we like the clip, it works REALLY well as a running leash and the ability to clip the leash around objects is really nice. But it only took our 65lb/8.5 month old puppy about 30 seconds to chew 75% of the way through the webbing/leash above the "traffic handle". I'll sew the leash back together but the thin lightweight material doesn't seem like a good choice for a puppy. He doesn't destructively chew other things, he just sometimes takes his leash into his mouth. We've never had a thicker (and cheaper) leash get chewed through.

I love this leash. I bought it for my service dog.
It is kind of wide- making it perfect for embroidery. I had it embroidered with "service dog"-but very soft and light weight. It is the most comfortable over the shoulder leash I have used. For that matter, I've never had such a comfy leash. It is fully adjustable and the quick clip buckle doesn't pull your hair like the snaps on the usual over the shoulder leashes. The soft, wide, tubular material doesn't dig into your shoulder.

This is the third version of the leash that I have owned. We haven't worn through them, I keep one in each car and I accidentially left one at a campsite, so I had to get the latest one. This is the only leash I own. I love the features, the loop at the bottom, the clip for the waist. I'm not sold on the talon clip. I wish it would open wider, I'm probably one of the few that perfers the old P clips. I also don't care for the padding in the handle area, but that's because I mostly use the leash around my waist, and it's in the wrong spot for that. Overall this leash is fantastic. Love the new colors too.

This is the second Flat Out leash I've purchased. The first leash still had the old snap on it and part you push down on had broken off. I was still able to use the leash and did because I loved all the features. I love the new snap design on the new Flat Out leash! I know I will not have any "breaking off" snap parts on this one!
I've seen several comments on how this leash is thinner than those in the pet stores. Thicker material does not always equate with stronger or better quality though. I like the lightweight, non-bulkiness of this collar compared to many of the store varieties.

I picked up the old version on the clearance bin page to round out an order I was placing and have been using it for a few weeks now with my service dog Rusty. This leash is great, allows me to have my hands free, keeps me from yanking or nagging on him when we are walking yet he is secure and the leash is there when I need to get his attention. Additionally for those worried about balance or stability problems the lower attachment point makes it so that your dog is much less likely to tople you when compaired to the over the shoulder hands free leashes......

I'm not much for the doggie bling, but her very servicible leash and collar was fraying and stained. This looks just spoiled enough for a happy mutt to be seen on the town, and once it gets dirty can go on to it's intended "on the trails" life.

The clasp reminds me of the kind used on leads for horses. I have always wondered why those aren't used for dog leashes as they are so easy to attach and detach and are still super secure. I bought this on a different site that ships ruffwear to canada, but I wanted to write up a review anyways. I have to say I LOVE this leash. The traffic handle is a lifesaver for many situations and the over the shoulder workings are awesome, I can make it fit perfectly, most over the shoulder leashes are much to big for me. This one can fit anyone. The only thing I'd like to see are clips that are heavy duty since I can't use the tie feature with my dog, the little plastic clips would snap in seconds. I love this leash though and when it wears out I,ll be getting another for sure!

Flat Out Leash is by far the best leash on the planet for anyone with any kind of lifestyle (yeah, a little opinionated but hey). There are several simple features that make this THE BEST leash on the planet. First is the fabric they use. This fabric is soft and pliable making it very comfortable to use, especially if you are training and needing to give corrections or if you don't train and have a puller. Another cool feature that some other leashes have is a nifty handle right at the clasp for the collar allowing you to keep close control of your pooch when the situation calls for it. And yet another feature and the big seller here is the adjustable handle. Now back when I got my first Flat Out Leash they didn't have the padded handles they have today (so this is now even better than before), so today you get a nice padded handle which is adjustable with a clasp. This makes it possible to put the leash on something like your waist or a post or picnic bench or anything else that's handy and suitable for the task. Another nice change in the newer style is the clasp, it's a pinch style clasp allowing you to more quickly attach and remove it from your dog, I also think it's a stronger connection (which is important in any kind of rescue situation).

This leash can be used so many different ways. Like that I can wear it around my waist or just hold in my hand. The release feature to the collar makes it easy to attach. It comes in such fun colors and is a soft material so it does not chafe your hands. Get one, you will not be dissapointed!

I love the hands free walk and the short grab handle. I have the old style clip, but it works fine for us.

I like the change away from the carabiner type clasp, and the fact that it can now rotate so the leash does not get as twisted up. The clip at the end is really handy as well. The low handle is great when coming up to other dogs when on walks or runs.

Good quality but a bit short for running
Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!
Quality of the leash is high as usual. A few comments - the clasp is a bit awkward, would prefer a caribiner. Also, when I put the leash around my waist for hiking or running, it is a tad too short (it ends up tugging). Would be great if added a foot or two. I will likely use as a regular leash or to tie to stationary object, but not around waist to run and hike (which was the main reason I bought it for).

I love this leash, its easy to use and makes jogging with my Lab a joy. I can job hands free and keep up with my Lab but if needed grab the lower part and reel her in (if a car or another dog is coming). Best purchase in a long time.

We are learning to walk with a leash. I jog and this is really good for that. Mack Ty is a big 6 month old and very strong. I put the leash around my waist and can easily controll him. I love it and tell everyone where I got it.

Top quality nylon, stiching, and metal. It works perfectly as described. I am happy with not only this, but with all of my Ruff Wear products, to include this, the Apprach Pack, and Hoopie Collar.

A great training leash for the handler to keep the dog by your side.
I wish there had been instructions on the ways to set up the leash for its different conversions.

We take this leash out on trail runs all the time, but also use it around town. I love that I can simply unclip the leash, and then clip it around a table or post to secure our dog when we're out eating.

This is the best. leash. ever. Great color choices, and amazing functionality. We like that you can clip one end of the leash around your dog's neck like a collar, since we generally don't keep a collar on our pup if we're hanging out at home. We also love being able to clip him around our waists when we're working in the yard. We have the Topo blue and are planning on getting some other colors. Love this leash!

Already have several leashes, but couldn't help ordering this one with the Cascade pattern. This is a great looking and functional leash.
The webbing material seems thicker/sturdier than the old model, but what really made me decide to get this leash is the new clip.
This is the clip I was waiting for and that the Flat Out leash deserves. Now I can really do any type of activity with my dog and not worry about the leash unclipping. Thank you very much for developing this new clip design. It's functionality seems to be bullet proof. I hope it stands the test of time.
