Seriously. We were hiking in Colorado last fall when my dog, Nellie, drifted to the side of the access road we were on and immediately jumped back, whining and frothing at the mouth. I saw a big snake slithering off into the grass. Thinking it was a rattlesnake, we flagged down some mountain bikers who rode off to get park rangers. While we waited, I checked Nellie for bites and didn't see anything (she's pure white, so it's easy to spot blood). Nellie seemed shaken, but ok, and when the rangers arrived about 15 minutes later, they said agreed that the snake may have given a "warning bump" and she was probably safe. What a scary close call, I thought.
The next day I went to put Nellie's harness on and saw two puncture marks on the chest strap, and two on the side. The call was closer than I thought and I'm forever grateful for the thickness of this harness and our luck that day.
