Beware of the Quick Ring Tag Holder

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

The tag holder is easy to get tags on and off, but the section that is bent up sliced through my tights and into my leg, ouch, I took it off right then and there. Yes it is way too big, I cut mine to fit. The folks at doggie daycare had to ask me how to operate the buckle, once you figure it out, it is easy. And it is pretty stiff at the beginning. Why I still like it: It is lightweight and secure, it holds it's color and shape once the dog wears it in. The color sheds hair and looks nice even after near daily swims and rolls in the dirt.

Not good

Would you recommend this product?.: No

Let me echo some of the other comments. First, the collar itself feels like cheap plastic. if you are accustomed to Ruffwear's other collars (I have several), this is markedly different. The prong doesn't move, which is very strange and I'm not sure of the logic behind it. My dog's neck is 24", so I ordered the 24-26 and it's so enormous that it doesn't fit at all. I'm sending it back tomorrow and I don't want another, only my money back. I'll put up with washing his other collars after a swim -- because of the immovable prong, the poor sizing, and the cheap feel, this is just a huge disappointment.

good quality, sturdy, bright color, seems waterproof, doesn't smell

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

First impression, this is a stiffer collar than her other ones, so don't expect this to be super soft material. The buckle is different than any others I have used, as the prong doesn't move independently from the buckle, so it's a bit weird to get used to using. I didn't measure her neck (rookie mistake) so her collar was way too big, so I put two more holes in it to make is smaller. Had I ordered the correct size (she probably needed around 11 inches) it would fit her really well. Now she just has a long part but it actually has been useful to grab and use as a mini leash. It has been in the ocean many times, camping, rolled around in, and HAS NOT left any color on her (she's a white and black dog). So far, I am very pleased. I expect this collar to last a long time. It has the Alaska lab stamp of approval.

Looked great but is too stiff and hard to use

Would you recommend this product?.: No

I bought two collars- one for each of our girls. They are so stiff and nearly impossible to put on because the buckle is also too stiff. I want a collar ready-to-wear-out-of-the-box -- unlike one of the other reviewers, I have no intention of working with this for 30 minutes to soften it up. That is Ruffwear's job. Back these go and good riddance!

Great collar

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

My girl gets into everything and needs to be cleaned up quite often. She also has a whistle GPS on her so being able to clean her collar without having to put it through the washing machine is quite important to me because removing/attaching the GPS collar attachment is difficult to do. This collar can easily be wiped clean without the need for washing. It does not retain any smells and looks great! Only thing about his collar that you should consider is that it is a buckle collar. So measure your pet to ensure correct fit and if you have a breed with loose skin (like a bloodhound) the collar may not be a exact perfect fit to your pets' neck because of the precut buckle holes. It works for my dog as it is used solely for ID tag and Whistle GPS attachment. I walk my pup on a chain reaction collar to ensure she doesn't slip out during her walk.

What I needed

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I know a lot of people have been on the fence about this collar, so I'm hoping this review will help with decisions. I'll start with the bad. They are incredibly stiff when you first get them. In order to actually have my dogs wear them, I had to spend a good 30 mins on each collar, bending them into a reasonable shape...because before I did, it just looked like they were wearing triangles. They are even more stiff where the buckle and loop is. This is because the already stiff material is doubled back and stitched together for the buckle. Also, because I had to bend it so much, there are a small amount of ripples in the reflective material, so that might lead to the reflective strips wearing off in the future. Not a huge deal for me, but it might be for others. Now for the good: After essentially reshaping them, they're still holding their circle shape. The material is stiff, but you can also feel how durable it is. They're coated in a beautiful matte, almost rubbery material. Love that. I don't feel like it will crack and have water ever get through. People have been complaining about the buckle system but I actually like it. Because of the stiffness, I know that once I pull it into place, that buckle will never loosen or budge. They also come in nice, bright colors for great visibility All in all, I got these collars specifically for paddle boarding, kayaking and canoeing, so small day trips. My dogs won't be wearing them every single day, so the good outweighs the bad for me and I actually really like them. They are great for what I got them for. I don't think I would ever want them to wear them constantly though, because of the lack of flexibility and my boys and I are very partial to their Top Rope collars. If you were wanting this collar for every day use, there might be better options out there, although I can't yet personally say that it wouldn't get softer with regular use

Miss the old version

Would you recommend this product?.: No

I had the older version for about 3-4 years. He's a swimmer, so it was great. Finally the stitching blew. At first I was excited about less plastic and more metal in this new version. Sizing was different and he should probably have a small, but I have a medium for now. I actually ordered two so I'd have a back up! It's stiff, but that's part of the water proof. My issue is that it's not staying clasped on the hook as he wears it. When I go to clip him in I have to double check and usually adjust the size again. I also don't leave it on all the time for safety and it's a pain to get on and off. I miss the old version that I could dial in the size and know that it was clasped. Ruff wear makes amazing products, but this time the "new" doesn't seem as good as the "old."

Very impressed.

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I had the past version of this collar for years. My pooch loves snow and water. This collar held up well. The stitching did end up giving out and was replaced with the new version. The sizing on the new version is different, I had to return the first one for a smaller size. The new clasp system takes a bit to get used to but works well. The old buckle was easier to use but perhaps not as secure?

Very Good

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

So far, so good. We have not had this collar for a very long time, but it seems to be okay. The only thing I do not like about it, is the stiffness. It is very stiff where the buckle is placed. We do not use it for our walks, we have got an harness for that, and therefore we have made it sit very loose around his neck due to the stiffness. It has a very nice colour!

not as good as the old model

Would you recommend this product?.: No

For our first dog we purchased the old model of the Headwater Dog Collar and it has stood the test of time (well 3 years til it got a little too grungy and we swapped it out for a Hoopie which someone gave us as a gift). Our new girl Dahli is an avid swimmer so the moment she came into our lives I was very excited to order this collar thinking that the new crux buckle system would be superior. Unfortunately I have to say that I prefer the older plastic buckle as it is more adjustable and we haven't had durability issues with it. Another issue came with sizing - I measured her neck to be 14" exactly which is between 2 sizes - I ordered up assuming then this would be more flexible for her if it needed a looser or tighter fit... nope! Even on the smallest hole it was SUPER loose on her neck (fortunately her head is much bigger so it didn't slip over her neck). Within 24 hours of wear she was constantly scratching at the collar - I believe this is due to the bulk and stiffness of it as we washed it to remove any residue. We threw on Doc's old headwater collar and she had no issue whatsoever. It fits better as it is more adjustable overall and is much lighter and more flexible. We'll give Doc a shot with the new one and see how he likes it and update the post from there... If you are in between sizes I'd suggest sizing down as well. Note that the collar may be sized correctly if you measure your dog's neck VERY tightly but if you just measure their neck like you would for a normal collar the sizing is definitely a bit large.
