two thumbs up

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

we were using one of your walking harnesses as a pseudo car restraint with a doggie seat belt hook that clicked in the seat belt thingy, however after a long car ride and several incidents where Carmen hit the seat in front I knew I had to buckle down and get a real car restraint. I am thrilled! She is able to stand and turn, but in the case of sudden braking she is held in place and does NOT fly off the seat. The fit is comfortable for her. The only down side is that I would recommend a little more room in the neck. While she has plenty of room around her abdomen, the neck just fits on the largest setting. Thanks Ruff Wear for another excellent product

awesome!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I am totally impressed. I bought the XX small as I have a small dog. I had originally bought the sleepypod because per the sizing instructions the smallest setting should have fit perfectly. It did not. I decided to do a little research and went with the ruffwear load up harness. Charlie is a little barrel chested for being a chihuahua so I went with the xx small. The ruffwear harness is true to size. I had also previous had a kurgo harness that worked well but just did not feel as safe to me as a seatbelt though it did work for a couple of years with no problems. I really love this load up harness. I like that it feels like it is sturdy and tough. Charlie feels fine with it on though it is stiff compared to the other harnesses. It does not rub him anywhere and he can walk and run with it. The loop in the back is a little strange. I wish it were higher up on the harness but since I use a thick short carabiner clip seat belt that I attached to the seat belt it is not long. Charlie also sits in his car seat and I feel he is completely safe. I would never suggest using a regular harness to buckle your dog into the car with as this is super dangerous. It is actually the reason why I switched to a car harness. I hit my breaks at some point because someone cut me off and charlie flipped and almost choked with his regular harness. I love the way this harness shortens. It takes a little work to get it just right but there are no loose ends and everything is wrapped and out of the way. I also love that the security clips slide into the holders, this gives it a little more security. I recommend this harness as it feels and looks very well made. So far I am impressed.

Amazing!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I ordered this harness for my one year old Weimaraner and have been using it for a week. It is great! Mars is able to move enough, get up and lay down, so he is comfortable. It prevents him from trying to get to the front of the car and protects him every time I stop or turn. Also although he is able to move, he can't fully move from side to side in the back seat which is perfect so he doesn't block my view while driving. I love this product!!! I feel more comfortable with him in the car knowing that he is safe!!!

Great, great product!!!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I had bought a harness for my dog that required the end of it to lock into the seatbelt. It was easy to use but once I clicked it in, I couldn't remove it from the base of the seatbelt. I had to go to the dealership and have them remove it and was told not to put it in there again. When I saw this harness, I figured I would give it a try and I'm glad I did. I like the fact that it's padded so more comfort for the dog and I like that the seatbelt slides through it. Well made and well worth my piece of mind when Theodore is in the car.

Did Not Work for Us

Would you recommend this product?.: No

No complaints about the quality of the construction of the harness. It seems robust and well made. However, this harness just isn't working for us and unfortunately is probably $90 I wish I had not spent. Perhaps this works well if you have a smaller dog that can actually "sit" in the seat right in front of the seatbelt, but our 85lb baby wants to either stand or lay down in the back seat (and is always up and down) and he basically ends up lengthwise across the entire backseat, which makes buckling him in a nightmare and immediately pulls the back of the harness sideways. It does not seem to work well with the tension of the seatbelt itself, he tried multiple times to stand up this weekend in the car and it was obviously locking him down, which made him very unhappy (and seemed to exacerbate his weaker hind legs from pushing against it during the car ride). I've watched the video numerous times and read the instructions; my husband and I are both confident we did the adjustments correctly, it just isn't working with his size, how he positions himself in the back seat and the seatbelt pulls the harness to the side since he doesn't sit facing forward. I have always loved everything I've bought from Ruffwear, this will be our first failed purchase and I'm hopeful I'll be able to return it given it will not be usable for us going forward.

I have no human kids, only animals and they go everywhere I go. This past weekend we put the load-up harness to the test...Bobby, my dog, road in the side by side ATV with her human dad and I followed...I watched her try to jump from the ATV while it was moving...The new seatbelt held on to her unlike the previous one that came apart and she was tossed from the ATV...I have use many of the ruff wear products over the years and would highly recommend them to anyone that loves their dog as much as I do...

We're so glad we've made this purchase for jigsaw's safety!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

We LOVE this harness. Easy to put on, yet VERY secure. Jigsaw feels comfortable with it on. Design of the harness also allows for Jigsaw to sit up and look out the window, and lay down. Definitely prevents him from hitting his head and neck on the seats and windows when coming to a stop, short stops, etc. Also helps with restraining him from trying to climb over the seats and running around when parked and trying to exit our vehicle. Makes it very easy to open the door, grab the leash, unbuckle the seatbelt, and out he goes. So far any products we've purchased from this company haven't disappointed us! We're definitely fans!

I've always been worried about him riding in the car without a seatbelt - now he can proudly sit in the back set with my son - secured in case of accident. But more importantly, it keeps him from climbing into the front seat while I'm driving so he can lick my face.

Working for us!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

My Service Dog could not use Sleepypod (the only harness independently approved in crash tests) - he got painfully tangled up. This harness (crash tested by Ruffwear) keeps him from standing up - probably a good thing - but allows him to sit or lie down on either side without tangling. I find it much harder to fasten than Sleepypod and it doesn't actually look as secure but is the best for us. Your mileage may vary. (Three stars because of complicated fitting and fastening.)

Harness fits well. I like the reinforced chest plate. Zoe seems comfortable, but definitely secured in the back seat. The only negative, we drove to Colorado, so long stretches, Zoe could stand, but got tangled in seat belt when she turned around on the seat. I am working on how to set this up for use in our 20ft. RV. so she can stay on her usual bed on the floor.

Love it!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I really cannot recommend this harness enough. We had the car harness by Bergan, it was OK, but then the Center for Pet Safety Studies came out, and we wanted something safer. We got the Sleepy Pod Sport for our dogs because it was highly rated. Big mistake. Perhaps because of the build of our dogs (Standard Poodles with deep chests), it did not work at all. Getting the belt through both harness loops was horrendous and took forever. Then once fastened, my dogs could not move because of the way the belt and harness interacted. When I took the harness out, one of my dogs ran away. Every time, would look at the harness and run downstairs into the basement. My other dog, who is more laid back, got flipped onto his back and was scrambling wildly in the harness. Sleepy Pod was nice enough to take them back. That left us without a harness that we trusted for the car. I looked at Load Up, saw the crash tests, read your material on why it is not certified and why the design you have makes sense, and I agreed with you. Just took at 6.5 hour drive using the harnesses, and they worked great! Thank you! We all LOVE the Load up!

I got this harness after a trainer had recommended it (since it is crash tested). I travel long distances on very congested highways 5-6 times a year and I needed something to keep my precious pup safe in the back seat while we travel! My pup was kept safe in the rear seat and was still able to sit up and lay down. She got adjusted to having it on quickly as well. I would definitely recommend this harness to any dog owner! Only con (minor) is not having a place to hook a leash on. I solved this by attaching a collar with a leash on my dog before unstrapping her from the seat belt.

Comfortable & fits well

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

We haven't been in a crash with this, so like another reviewer said, we can only say that it gives us peace of mind. The medium size fits Stella, a petite 70 pound German Shepherd. She seems comfortable in it and it hasn't chafed her even though she wears the harness for hours when we reach our destination--running, jumping to catch the Frisbee, and relaxing. Fitting it to her was tough when we first received it but we watched the video and put some work into it. Most harnesses aren't crash-tested, so it's great that this one is.

Sizing makes the difference

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I previously had the L/XL version of this harness for a Doberman with a 33" chest. I guess sizing for this breed presents a challenge since they are such slim dogs with very large chests. Although the L/XL was easy to adjust for a tight fit, it was simply too long underneath for my male dog. I'm happy to report that the Medium Load Up Harness is a much better solution for my Doberman. With the Medium the neck adjustment is set nearly at it's maximum length, while the girth strap has plenty of extra webbing that I've rolled up with the keepers. Most importantly, the medium harness stops about 3-4 inches before my male dog's genitals. Although I also have an Approach Pack in a L/XL, I think my future Ruffwear purchases will be a size medium. In the backseat of my Wrangler, my dog sometimes ends up with his front feet in the floor while his back feet remain on the seat. He can usually hop back up on the seat himself, but I have had my front passenger reach back a couple of times to help him back on the seat. Sometimes as my dog bounds from one window to the other, the seat belt gets pulled out all the way until it clicks and locks like when you're using the seat belt with a car seat. There's nothing I can do but wait for a safe spot to pull over and fully retract the seat belt to reset it. Overall I like the appearance and construction and ease of use of the Load Up Harness, and I'm glad Ruffwear has started to make other products with metal hardware as well.

prior to purchasing this harness I would have my dog in a regular walking harness and tie the leash to the head rest. I wouldn't feel comfortable enough to roll the window down. I feared she may try and jump out. Fitting this new harness was a breeze, it sits comfortably on the dog and knowing she cant really move around a lot is great! She did become used to the old ways and I have had to pull over a few times because she tries to circle in it and gets stuck but this has nothing to do with the product, but the dog :) Thank you for keeping my dog safe!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Connor has a brain issue called Ataxia. The cerebellum does not develop correctly and affects his gait and balance. Since last summer, he has learned to get up, walk, run, chase balls and swim with a lifejacket. The Load Harness provided him with perfect support and was easily adjusted. We will be purchasing a new one since he managed to chew through it before we had learned to adjust it snug enough for him. He will always have to use a harness and the good thing is that he is well past his teething time. Your product was the best fitting and most supportive harness that we have purchased.

I really like this harness - it's easy to adjust and put on and seems more comfortable for the dog than another one I have which is the only other one that passed the crash test. I agree that the bottom plate gets pretty close to the male dog's private parts and could be uncomfortable for long trips. Overall a great design and seems very safe.

Would you recommend this product?.: No

I am very disappointed in this product. My dog is extremely calm and well mannered in the car. The only time he ever moves while the car is in motion is to get comfortable really (maybe switch from laying on his left side to his right). He has been getting SO tangled up in this harness multiple times while driving. I've given him plenty of time to get used to it, yet EVERY SINGLE TIME it's on him in the car he gets so wrapped up in it he cant move. Like i said, he is very good about being in the car, so i can't say its because he's jumping around or not staying still. Something about the way the harness is made, and where the seat belt lays is getting him all tangled. I'm sick of constantly having to pull over to untangle him, and will not be using this harness again.

Our 2 Flat Coated Retriever / Springer Spaniel mixes had walking harnesses that we used to clip our seatbelt leashes to. But we didn't feel like that set up would really protect them. So, we bought these vests for them. We like this vest because it looks very sturdy and comfortable. It covers the entire chest area, not just one shoulder area like the walking harness (from a different company). One of my dogs like to sit backward, so he is still adjusting to it. Now, we can put the vest on top of our walking harnesses and be safe!

Good quality, comfortable

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

This is a well-made, comfortable harness that my service dog seems to like wearing. It does not work correctly in every type of vehicle. The rear bench seat in the 1992 Honda Civic that I sometimes drive is too narrow for my 62lb dog to be buckled in and sit properly without the harness twisting up weird, unless the footwell is stuffed with something for him to lay his head and front paws on. It works well in my pick-up truck. He does not slide around or get to jump around. Once adjusted, it is easy to put on and take off. And, again, I emphasize, that my dog likes it! He wears it in the house sometimes instead of his bulkier work harness or other gear. He can pull me from laying flat if he needs to do so. It also fits underneath his mobility harness without interference, so there is no annoying harness switching every time we go from car to store and vise versa. I would like to see a modification made to the way you actually have to loop a seatbelt through and buckle up the dog. It is challenging to reach around my dog's butt, get the seatbelt, shove it through the loop, and buckle him in. This dog has a big butt and it is not easy to get a seatbelt with a shoulder belt built-in, through the loop, pulled around said dog's big, squirming butt, and close enough to the seat to buckle. Lap belt only buckles are much easier, but becoming rare to find. Maybe an adaptor? A small note, I would like it if this harness had a D-ring leash hook near the top for walks and potty breaks.

great idea but needs some engineering development

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Thank you RuffWear for the due diligence you've put into developing the Load Up harness. I've been waiting for something like this for four years (since I've had my service dog). It's quality constructed and the video instructions for fitting were spot on. My only criticism is the seat belt / loop connection. Maybe it's just my lack of experience but after I thread the seat belt through the loop & tighten up the seat belt the entire harness slips over to the side & the fit of the harness is not proper anymore. When I get my dog out of the car she cannot stand up, or sit up, and the harness is askew. The loop on the harness & the seat belt are sometimes twisted up. I love my dog & I want her to be safe while in the car, I'm just not sure if this is the way to go. She is not happy about wearing it but I call the shots for her & she complies with wearing it but I can see it's not very comfortable for her after she's belted in. Any advice? I will recommend this product but with some reservations.

My GSD is generally on the line between the M and L/XL sizes for Ruffwear harness (right around 32 inches). I've always gone with L/XL before and been very happy with the fit, but after reading the reviews saying the belly plate was too close on some males, I decided to try the medium. It fits perfectly and isn't too small at all. I would agree with those who have said the sizes seem to run a little big on these (which worked perfectly for us). Functionally the harness is great- study but comfortable. I take my dog on frequent, lengthy car rides, including occasional multi-day road trips, and this harness looks like it will be much more comfortable for extended use than the car harness I had previously.

Well designed harness. Relatively easy to use, it gets better with time. No problems with the dog adjusting to it. If the dog is not calm, bouncing from window to window, then there is a possibility of entanglement. This is a dog training problem not a material defect. I found that keeping the seat belt buckled all the time and adding a mountaineering rated self locking caregiver made things even easier for me, but I happened to have the hardware, it is not inexpensive and don't even think on cutting corners, the cheap stuff is only good for carrying grocery bags.

After recently having a front wheel come off my wagon while driving on the interstate (and subsequently being told repeatedly how amazing it was that I didn't roll/crash) I'd started thinking about strapping down those 2 potentially 80 lb. projectiles that I love so much. The load-up harnesses have changed road trips for us completely (in a good way)! They are well constructed and fairly easy to adjust after watching the video. As stated by another reviewer, it seems as if there is potential to cause boy-part chafe, although the belly plate on my male gsd avoids this by a solid inch, so I'd say that aspect would largely depend on individual proportion. The biggest added benefit, and the most surprising to me, is how much the harnesses have reduced travel anxiety in my 2 shedders. I drive a wagon that I normally leave backseats folded down in, and while my dogs are not particularly prone to stress/anxiety, there is always a lot of standing up/sitting down/moving around/panting in my face/etc. whenever we take road trips. The harnesses have eliminated that! And yes, two big dogs can occupy a backseat in these comfortably both laying down (although I suppose dogs should like each other as there is some snuggling required). It's my personal impression that they seem more relaxed having an 'assigned seat' now. I've taken several 4+ hour car trips since purchase and this has made roadtripping so much more peaceful. The pups settle right down after getting buckled in and I can drive with the new peace of mind that no one will go flying through the windshield should it come to that. I am beyond satisfied with the ease of use, comfort, and mechanics of this product. It is cheap life insurance for my two favorite road warriors, and I'm so grateful to Ruffwear for bringing my furry family this product-- 5 barks!

This harness is great, easy to put on and take off. My dog seems very comfortable in it. It is easy to buckle into the car. My only complaint is that it doesn't come in more colors. :-)

Great

As always Ruffwear gear is as advertised, functional and sturdy. Fit seems a bit different than the palisades pack, both dogs measured as Medium (right in middle of range) for both products - pack fits much better than harness. Harness seems big - we had to adjust it about as small as it can get to fit. Haven't used it on the male in the car yet, I am going to look closely where the belly plate ends before we go - hoping not an issue as with other reviewers.

Kind of heavy but it also shows you that it is high quality material and a well-engineered design. My dog somehow managed to unclick the seat-belt in the bench of the car-- and was suddenly in the front seat with me - nothing to do with this product except that it is something to consider when you're choosing what kind of harness or containment method you want to use for a dog in the backseat, based o his or her escape capabilities. Overall, I am satisfied with this product and plan on using it for our next big road trip.

Excellent

Would you recommend this product?.: No

I ordered a medium and a L/XL for my two dogs. 50lb cattle dog mutt and a 80lb but very heavy built Lab . . . the sizing leaves lots of extra space so it took us awhile to adjust them but the dogs seem comfortable and they're definitely very study harnesses. Would be nice if there was also a leash ring for quick breaks out of the truck but I can see how this might encourage some to use the harness incorrectly. Overall we're very happy and the price is excellent.

Fits well, dog is comfy in it. easy on and off. Only complaint is that she tends to get the seat belt and extremely twisted around the harness loop when she moves a lot though, not too hard to fix though.

I agree with Malcolm- a little close for the boys

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I have been eagerly awaiting this product. I ordered one online after carefully reviewing the sizing. My 75 lb. Golden was a "Large". I watched the video and adjusted it as recommended. But I agree that the belly plate is so close I am afraid it would rub him with any length of wear. I am working with Support right now to see if it can be adjusted to work (perhaps tighten up the front?). Other than that, it is fantastic, and seems well built and easy to use.

My 10lb poodle cross loves to roam in the car and sniggle on my lap during every road trip. We have tried multiple car-harnesses in the past but he always manages to wiggle his way out of them. The Load-Up Harness is easy to put on and he can't get out of it. He's comfortable and safe in the backseat all the time now.

Well made, poor proportions

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I ordered this for my 90lb male German Shepherd. I ordered the size L/XL per the sizing recommendations. The belly plate of this harness sits pretty much directly in front of his boy parts, with not even a finger width of space between the edge of the belly plate and his boy parts. My male is not a close coupled dog. The proportions of this size at least are made too long for male dogs. I'm really disappointed because Ruff wear just fixed this issue with their Webmaster harness redesign. I hope they redesign this a bit and fix the proportions so it won't rest right by male dogs' boy parts. My boy is so uncomfortable with the harness being so close to his parts that I will be having to return it, unfortunately. I was really looking forward to having this crash tested harness for my mobility service dog's safety.

We were looking for something to provide comfort for Boomer while in the car, and provide safety (if needed) and easy for us to use. This was the perfect product. It keeps him strapped in but allows him some freedom. GREAT product...

I've been hoping that RUFFWEAR would make a car harness for dogs, and now they have. I've tried the other brand harness that has been ranked very high in crash tests, but it really was not designed for anything except sitting up with the tail end against the seat back. My dog likes to lie down, and that harness -which I really wanted to work - just didn't work for her. Her feet would end up where they shouldn't be and she even became entangled in it somehow. This Ruffwear harness allows her to lie down. It uses the car's seat belt to anchor it -which I think is the safest anchor. It has nice wide padding for the thorax. It's easy on and off but does not depend upon plastic snaps to attach. Seems strong. I would love to see the details of the crash tests that were done with this harness.
