Great

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

A very well-made pack. Looks great on my dog and he doesn't seem to mind having it on. The initial adjustment of the pack was a bit touch as I bought it when my dog was still filling out and had to alter the front tri-patch. It would be possible to make that patch area more adjustable. The only complaints I have are minor and mainly with the bladder system. Although the bladders do allow the hoses to be detached, (a great design feature), the hoses are kind of 'pre-shaped', (whether through design or simply storage), and don't necessarily effectively thread themselves around the bladder and out the zip ports. Also the pockets for the bladder are too large which allows the bladders to slip backwards, putting the load onto the dogs spine rather than shoulders. A piece of newspaper solves the second problem by preventing the bladders from sliding backwards, though a manufactured panel in the pocket to make the pocket the size of the bladder would not only hold it in place, but allow for a separate rear panel in there for light articles. A solution for the hoses would be something like the Camelbak Quick Link system that would allow the hoses to rotate even though locked into place. (Screwing those hoses on and off is a pain.) It would also be nice if there were some pull tabs on the bladder zipper compartment. Looking for a black pull in a black bag in anything other than full daylight is tedious. The test is this though..... if this bag were stolen or lost, would I buy another one? Sure would.

Freaking Fantastic

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I chose this pack over the others because of the bladders and detachable packs, and I'm glad I did. I use the pack mainly for adding weight to exercise Buddha on walks, and I use the harness for car travel. :) It's so much easier to put the harness on at home and simply reattach the packs when we get out of the car. The bladders add nice and comfortable weight without going overboard, and of course it's useful for water breaks.

Excellent!!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I searched and searched to find a pack for my little girl Isis (Great Dane). She weighs 125 lbs and has an extremey deap chest and very skinny waist. It holds on to her well and does not rub her the wrong way. The adjustments worked like a dream and. I kept reading about the Palisades being the best and worth the extra money. Thus far we are extremely pleased with it and believe what all the others had to say to be true. The second time she put it on, she no longer worried about stuff hanging from her sides (a testament to the confort of the pack). She runs in it, pulls less on the lead than with collar, and carries two 2-liters back from the corner gas station with no problems. Can't wait to get it out on real trail!

What a great pack and harness system! We use the harness for hikes and the back for longer trips. The pack holds more than I would ever load so there is plenty of space for treats and other extras. The water bladders have worked really well and are a nice way to keep him cool in the summer. I love being able to take off the pack to give him a rest and still have the security of a harness. One suggestion- it would be great to be able to select the harness size and pack size separately. I need a medium harness but would prefer the small size bags.

Perfect dog pack, strong, convenient. My dog immediatly felt comfortable with it. I like the water bladders that also keep the dog's flanks cool. The harness is also very convenient and strong : my dog took a bath in the river wearing it, and it dried very fast, not being damaged at all.

Just got this pack due to the ring ripping off my old C.E. pack while riding my bike with my dog Sunny using the Walky-Dog bike leash. Sunny is HIGH ENERGY and needs a good run/long hike to tire her out everyday so a pack/harness combo is the only way to go. Water bladders are an awesome feature when you run out or there is no natural source nearby. Wu Tang is Forever.

Love all the aspects of the Palisades. One of the best items I have purchased for my dog. Harness wraps perfectly without creating pinch points or rub areas. The pack has plenty of room for my stuff and the dogs. I love the pull out straw attached to the water blivets and my dog appreciates knowing he always has water, even on the mountain top. I have a few other friends with these packs and we all agree we love our dogs ruck sacks.

OUTSTANDING!

Ordered this for my service dog so that he could carry his own water during the day as well as his other possibles. I have to say this is much better than his previous pack, the 2 litters of water capacity is great for the high temps here, and the quick detach makes it comfertable for Rusty as the pack can be removed when he is inside the car or laying down for long periods. Only complaint is the lack of color choice, would have loved green, dark blue, or even better Army Digital (ACU) to match my uniform...

The highest praise I give any pack is that "I forgot I had it on" and by all appearances that was Rex's impression of the Palisades pack. Loaded with 3 days worth of food and a about a liter of water, she was bounding over and under blown down trees and running up and down snow fields. There were no signs of chaffing or irritation which is more than I could say for my pack!

I think this is an amazing product! My dog absolutely loves carrying his own share of things and I usually put the pack on him even if we're walking in town. He loves to help carry groceries with me (he can carry about 17 lbs). We go on lots of adventures where he can run off leash and the bag has no problems holding up even though he unintentionally scrapes it against trees fairly often. It goes on pretty easily and the pack can be clipped on and off of the actual harness very easily so he can take a break when I do. I’m completely happy with the water bladders it comes with. Ours don’t drip at all and it’s nice that he can carry his own water on our backpacking trips – it comes in as a nice backup when we can’t get to a fresh water source. We went with the medium size and it fits him pretty well despite his deep chest and his slim waistline.

We ordered this pack because my GSD needed a harness for SAR work and we also backpack on vacations. My girl was able to carry her own water and some snacks when hiking. Love your Products

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Palisades Pack, what can I say, I always keep an eye out for better products and this is not exception. If you are in the market for a backpack for your dog let me save you some time. Ruff Wear makes the best packs. I look at everything from the materials used to the fit on the dog. Not only does this system fit the dog will but the shape of the pack helps build the load in a manner that supports the strengths of the dogs skeletal system (can't say that about many other packs out there). My first Palisades Pack was WAY back when they used a different fabric for the harness, they also used a different hydration system. The new system has a better harness. Rather than using the cushy material they used before for both the support system and the contact to the dog they've broken the system down into two parts. One part is the support system, this is the part that bares the load and stresses from the pack and the dogs activity. The other part is the cushy part that comes in contact with your dog. This means that they are able to make a harness system that is very strong and very comfortable. I can't say enough, this is the best pack out there for any dog.

Overall love this pack design

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Recently completed a 9 days, 70 miles hike on the AT trail. I love this pack design, especially the separate harness. The pack was roomy enough to carry 9 days worth of dog food (did not need the water bladders). His total pack weight was about 12 lbs at the start (including his sleeping bag.) Only one problem - the pack would slide forward on the steep downhills - he ended up with soreness in his shoulders and a sore spot behind one elbow. I am wondering how I can adjust it better to prevent this from happening next time. Much less of a problem with only 3- 4 days worth of food but resupply is not always an option.

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

My buddy Bandit, a 5 yo yellow labrador, and I did 220 miles of the Appalachian Trail this spring, Springer to Fontana Dam and 40 miles near Erwin, TN. We hiked in hail, lightening, rain, heat, humidity, and even the tornados. Bandit's Palsades Pack did awesome on the entire trip!!! We both loved the detachable backpack from the harness for rest stops and negotiating difficult obstacles. Entire pack dried nice in dryers when wet from rain. While other dog owners were modifying their packs in the 85 degree heat to keep their dog's cool, the Palisades helped keep Bandit as cool as possible. Bandit prefered mountain springs to the water from the water pouches so we sent the pouches home. Unfortunately, after doing so, we ran into many dry spells on the trail. IMO, the water pouches don't need the extra hoses to despense water. We always used the screw top to dispense water. I will be removing the hoses to reduce weight for next year. All stitching held up fantastic! Prior to our trip, I had loaded Bandit into my SUV with just the harness on and he broke one of the clips that holds the backpack to the harness. You can't replace those clips so we purchased a separate replacement harness. Thanks RuffWear - saved our trip! Discovered later that a simple zip tie could fix the old harness but then you couldn't separate the harness and backpack. Recommend never allowing the dog to wear the harness without the backpack when the harness isn't necessary to prevent damage to the harness clips. Only chauffing was a bit under Bandit's armpit areas. I had to do some minor sizing adjustments on my sewing machine to shorten a few straps, otherwise, the fit was fantastic!!!!! We also purchased and use the RuffWear Grip Tex boots on the trail. Only needed them a few hours a day toward the end of the trip. Made sure they were snugged up good and never lost a single boot. The grip on all the rocks rocked!!!!

RuffWear stands by there gear! My dog and I hit the trails as much as possible and the palisade pack has been with us on each trip. The pack has held up through brush, water, rocks, snow and more, but on a recent trip, my dog must have snagged the pack on a tree or rock causing a retention clip to break on the harness. I was able to complete a quick field repair, but wanted to see if RW could send me out a replacement part. Not only did I get the part, I got a brand new harness from RW. Now that is a warranty. My dog and I were fans of RuffWear before this, now we're fans for life. Thanks for such a great product and wonderful customer service!

I'm a backpacker, and now my dog is too. I used to have to haul around 3 or 4 days worth of his junk. Now the work is on him. He seems to be comfortable with the way the harness attaches. I originally intended to use this pack for hiking but I picked up running instead. The Singetrak pack might have been better suited to running but there are several things I like better about the Palisades pack. I really like the hydration system. Having a hose vs a water bottle is extremely convenient. I don't need to mess with a water bottle or a bowl - I can just turn the hose and and squirt it into his mouth. He loves drinking running water anyway. Also, since the pack is removable, you get both a harness and a pack in one. Furthermore, having some additional space is nice. The compression system is also nice since it has more capacity that I really need. Overall, awesome product.

I love this pack. Its wonderful. I would recommend it to anyone. I didn't really need to get the super deluxe Palisades pack, I think a Singletrak or two would have been more properly suited to my needs, since I usually only have the dog pack a water bottle in each side for weight. I haven't even used the water bladders yet since it isn't anywhere near summer yet. I completely love this pack, but since I have two dogs, I'm thinking about selling someone who can use it more and going to a couple Singletrack Packs for hiking water and light weight on walks/runs.

Awesome

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I am a disabled vet, and my doberman, Crutch, is a mobility assistance and medical alert dog. I have nerve damage in my back and legs that causes me to lose muscle control in my legs, and I will often fall to the ground when this happens. Crutch is trained to come along side me and brace himself so that I can use him to assist me getting back on my feet. I don't let this stop me from being as active as I can, and nothing could keep me off the trail. This pack, harness combo is an amazing help to me. I don't like, nor do I need a traditional mobility harness, and this one gives me the support I need when I need it, and is much more comfortable for the pooch. The added convenience of being able to add the pack to take along my meds, supplies for him and I, and just a little extra packing space for long treks is an awesome bonus. The price is a little more than I would have liked to have paid, more than a lot of mobility harnesses even, but it is the only thing out there that truly suited my need. I would definitely recommend this to anyone that gets out a lot, or even does an occasional medium to long trek.

Best dog pack on the market

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I'm really picky when I buy outdoor gear. I mean, REALLY picky. This pack seemed like the best dog pack on the market before I bought it; now I'm convinced it really is. It carries well, has many pockets for storage, compression straps, and the pack easily detaches from the harness for easy adjusting. Tip: When you initially fit your dog, remove the pack from the harness to adjust the harness straps first.

This is an amazingly versatile pack. Best feature: Removable Saddlebags. I use it in town (my dog works as service dog) and on the mountain trail (We love the outdoors. With the compression straps I'm able to stop the load from shifting on my dog. So whether he's crashing through the brush helping find the trail, scampering across glaciers, or carrying my stuff to the office, this pack helps him do it all. I have an earlier version than this particular pack and the water bladders were next to the dog which had the added benefit of helping keep the dog cool in hot climates, and providing some cushion between the bumps of the gear in the pack. I've run into others on the trail with their dogs with the same pack. I haven't heard one complaint.

This has got to be the toughest dog pack out there. I got it for my Border Collie mix, Abbi, and it has just been incredible. My BC has SO much energy, and doesn't slow down for one second when we are on the trails, but this pack has held up tremendously! The way this dog tears and tumbles through the woods, I don't know how any pack could survive, but this one stays securely in place, doesn't rub her, and is still as good as new! Once Abbi even caught the pack on some barbed wire, and it didn't rip. I really love the Water Bladders and the removable feature of the bags. I highly recommend this pack to anyone - serious hiker or not.

This is the third dog pack I've tried. Wish I would've just bought one from the get-go. It came highly recommended by our friends that run bird dogs but I wasn't sure if it would be substantial enough for our boerboel. Turned out to be a great pack with loads of space. Even with both water bladders full there is still ample room. I love that it stays put, even through the bounding and pouncing of our large puppy. He has put it through the ringer and it's still in great condition. The padding under the front legs is great and we never have problems with it rubbing and causing sores. Thanks a bunch!

Love It!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I originally bought the approach pack in the xs for my Brittany mix when he was a puppy as the palisades did not come in the smaller size, now that he is finished growing (he is about 35 lbs now) the small palisades fits perfectly! I love this pack, its like big brother of the approach, the water bladders are so useful, and my favorite feature is the removable saddle bags. I spend a lot of time in the outdoors and this pack is a must, perfect for carrying everything, it gives my dog a job to do, plus it gives him a bit more of a workout, which is wonderful as I feel fairly confident he could run forever! I really like the water sealed zippers, but did find it helped to spray the entire pack with a water repelling spray, especially for longer backpacking trips, and water crossings, otherwise you need to bag everything in it. The pack is pretty easy to balance and fits really well, my dog doesn't even seem to notice it once we have started, the ruffwear highlands bed fits in it perfectly, along with water, food, baggies, and of course a ball or Frisbee. This pack has stood up to a lot of trail miles, and abuse but still looks fabulous. The only thing I wish is that it was manufactured in North America, because I really prefer to buy products made here, however after all the rigorous product testing my dogs have put these packs through, I am glad to say that it is of great quality and durability.

I couldn't be happier.

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I bought this pack at a hardware store (of all places) for a camping trip in the middle of nowhere. Boss was a little hestitant with the pack since it was bigger and heavier than his previous one. But after getting him used to the harness, I put the empty pack on him and played chase with him. He settled in with it and now he wears it with pride. Being in Florida there is not a lot of places to go hiking for long periods of time but he has now grown accustomed to having a small amount of weight in the pack and loves going on small hiking adventures and wearing the pack at art festivals as well. Plus it comes in handy when my hands and purse are full. I am very happy with the construction of the pack. The V-neck in the chest is much more comfortable as well as the padded girth and belly straps. It has been very durable and can take getting rubbed up on trees and it is very stable. His previous pack could never get balanced properly and all the of plastic D-rings have been ripped off. The only improvement I would suggest on the Palisades pack would be putting some sort of bungee straps on the top for carrying more items. I am very happy with this product and I am looking to pick up another one for a friend's dog. Thanks for making such a great pack for my dog.

After years of doing serious Canadian back-country hiking (4+ days in the Rockies) I'm happy a company finally made a dog pack that is up to the standards of the quality of human back packs. There are lots of packs on the market (which I have owned many) but none of them are as good as this one. The fit and finish are great. It still isn't perfect. It definitely needs bigger capacity - A 100lb (trained and conditioned) Mal can carry 30lbs easy and you struggle to get anywhere near that in this pack size. Also the 'hole in the top of the harness' has 2 problems (1 -causes long hair breeds to have fur sticking out which ends up increasing breakage and rubbing on the back bone, 2 - pack and harness compress in this area with lots of up and down elevation bc of less structure, which ends up causing more movement and possible rubs if not readjusted). This area definitely needs a mesh or something more for support (but love the handle for sure!). I would also love to see Ruffwear make a 'rainproof pack cover' (similar to human pack covers; light and compressible) that could be tossed over top for heavy down pours. The first 7 day hike we did with it on it rained the second day and the pack stayed wet for 2 more after that. The water bladders are pretty much useless and poorly accessible for more than a day hike (which we don't do many of)... you don't want to unpack the whole thing to fill the bladders each day. But yes I would still recommend it!! I was just hoping Ruffwear would read the review and make a few adjustments!

Well constructed

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I bought this pack for my Bernese Mountain dog/Newfoundland mix. We use it on walks to burn off extra energy and also on hikes. It seems pretty water resistant in this wet Western Washington climate, but we haven't been in too many down pours yet. It is so much better than some of the cheaper dog backpacks out there. I like that the pack seperates from the harness as well. I may end up getting a smaller version for my cocker so he can burn off extra energy on his walks.

I love this product, but I already have an expensive (to me, anyway) webmaster harness, why would I want to buy another one to get this pack? Why can't you sell just the pack system separately? Still I give this product 5 stars, even though I'll never buy it the way you sell it now. Unless the stand-alone webmaster harness goes bad somehow. Which I doubt, because it's so well constructed!

Great

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

After a lot of research I purchased my first, and last dog pack. We hike and camp on the coast and in the Eastern Sierras without a problem. This pack fits my dog great, and distributes the weight evenly. There have not been any fit or chaffing probelms. The pack detaches easily from the harness, and in Bear rich areas, I can easily hang the whole pack out of the reach of any predator. This pack gives my dog a job to do and at the end of the day he carries his food, food bowl, boots, bed, and water on every trip. Very cool.

A Must For Hiking With My Dog

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Used the small size for my Golden Retriever on over 100 day and weekend hikes in the past 2 years and the pack is still in perfect shape. I used the handle all the time to carry the dog over large rocks. I have also used the leash and clasp (when on the dog) to pull me up on slippery snow covered trails. Always stays in place and I don't spend alot of time balancing. The small size is more than large enough to carry as much weight as the dog can handle. I also get many positive comments about the pack on the trails.

The first time I put this on Bayler he was not thrilled but after his first hike with it he quickly learned that pack equals fun and gets super excited whenever he sees it. It fits well and he can move in it like he has nothing on at all. It's great that he can carry is own water & food.We get tons of compliments from passing hikers. I love that the pack can be unclipped as we use the harness for traveling. Great multi use item for the adventure loving dog!

Fits like a glove!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

This pack can do it all. It's the second pack I've purchased. The first was another brand that was inexpensive, but also ineffective. It simply fastened under the belly with two straps and as the dog walks the natural side to side motion caused the pack to slip. The Palisades is a dream. My golden weighs 65 lbs at 5 years old and is tall with a narrow waist (he's an athlete). He's a tough fit, but this pack is perfect! The harness keeps everything where it should be, even as he runs through rivers & over hills. We've detached the pack and used the harness alone to lower him down obstacles to an owner below or for a picnic break. He can get wet & shake off & the pack is still in place. A great design! Don't waste money like I did. Make this your first pack purchase. You won't regret it.

Fabulous design!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

They thought of just about everything when designing this pack! What originally caught my eye while dog pack shopping was the hydration bladders, but the detachable saddle bags and the handle on the harness make this pack worth it's weight in gold. If I had to make one suggestion would be to make the padding on the chest straps just a couple inches longer. After several day long hiking trips I've noticed my dog's skin gets a little irritated from the straps.

Outstanding Quality

We've used this pack for over two years now & are about to order a smaller one for a new pet. Being able to remove the pack easily, while kepping the harness on, is the best feature. Waterproof zippers. Fits really well. Seems comfortably padded. Snug & secure. 3 way harness accross front chest keeps weight over front shoulders. I can easily lift my 90lb pet with the handle on this harness! Lots of places to hang extra gear. Dog remains extremely manueverable, up, down, over, under, running, & jumping extreme obstacles. Dogs go into work mode as soon as a slightly loaded pack is upon them. Amazing behavior change instantly. Makes for pleasant walking. She tires a LOT faster with a small load(water, treats, toys, & even our lunch), which makes for better trainig time afterwards. I highly recommend this product for outdoor adventures, or simply to exercise your pet more. ***PLEASE DO NOT OVERLOAD YOUR PET'S PACK! Evenly distribute the load on both sides of pack. You and you pet will be very happy!

Awesome gear! Our boxer Sam is only a little over a year old and had never worn a harness, let alone a pack of this size. With all the adjustments as well as the compression straps, he didn't miss a beat. I expected at least a little chafing because he has such a thin coat, but there was none. Anyone who has had a 1yr old male boxer know they have no shortage of energy. By loading just the water bladders it helps to slow him down just enough and gives him a great workout! The incorporated handle has already come in handy in hikes in Denali Park & Hatcher's Pass. Awesome pack!

I have an older version of this pack that ripped within the first few miles of a trip. This Pack is much more durable than they have been in the past. The detachable bags are essential and the harness is perfect alone, helping your four legged friend up over obstacles couldn't be easier. While I didn't have much use for the hydration bladders, I think I will use them on my forthcoming trip to the desert.

Terrific design. Used these for an overnight trek in the pemi wilderness. Dogs loved drinking straight from the hydration pack hoses. We loved that the dogs could lug their own food and water. We had some difficulty in properly fitting the harness, and the saddle bags were occasionally off balance. The detachable saddle bags and built-in hydration system more than make up for the harness fitting issues. In time we hope to get the harness fits dialed in for our two Leos! Bags also seem quite durable. Dogs had to squeeze through some narrow passages through rock and cross chest deep streams. Dogs very quickly got used to the packs and always seemed comfortable. Thanks for a great product.

Perfect design and well thought out

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

A+ rating on the Palisades Pack! We have two Greyhounds and each dog has a pack. We did a very strenuous 4 day/night backpacking trip and had to scramble up rock ledges several times. If it was not for the dog packs, the assist handles and awesome construction of the packs, our dogs would not have made the ledges. Not to mention got hurt a few times, possibly some pretty serious injuries. At one point one of the dogs tipped over backwards on the ledge and I had hold of the assist handle. She swung out backwards away from the ledge (as far as my arm goes back and with a 10 foot drop to lower ledge area) and I was able to swing her back onto the ledge, without injury and without the pack breaking or loosening up. The pack held up to the force of a 64 pound dog swinging like someone swinging a heavy bag back and forth. The other dog is 72 pounds and she was lifted numerous times using the assist handle all with ease and no issue. The design and quality of these packs are second to none. Again, if it wasn't for the design and quality of the pack, we would not have been able to do the hike. We had two other brands in the past and both were poor design and did not have assist handles or the strength to do what the Ruffwear packs can. If you hike with a dog, then the Palisades Pack is the best and only way to go! The hydration system is also a huge plus because of scarce water sources on some trails. Last, the ease and security of being able to take the pack portion off and leave on the harness is a priceless feature of the pack. Perfect product.

We use these packs not only for our own dogs, but for our adventure dog walking business. We are very hard on them since up to 8 dogs are pushing and shoving each other around on the trail. They also end up in the ocean or river every now and then on accident, and they stand up to it all really well. They also fit all the dogs really well with a minimum of movement on the dog as they walk , run or wrestle. We have tried lots of other packs, and these are so much better than all the rest it's almost ridiculous! Buy one, you won't be dissapointed. The customer service and shipping people are also just fantastic, I can't say enough good things!!

This pack is awesome! My boy is tall and skinny with a deep chest and almost impossible to fit a harness for. Almost. This fits him perfectly. I also love the handle on top to help Graham out of some tough spots on the snowshoe trail. He crashes through brush and thorns and this pack takes it all. Very comfortable for my boy to sit and lie down in. We have an older model and the bladders didn't have the straws attached like they do now. Still, love it and get lots of compliments on it. I've had it about 4 years and it's still going strong.

This pack is great, very well thought out. The Dog loves the hydration system as he likes to drink right from the hose. Also there is plenty of space for food and a toy. And the daisy chain works great to strap his sleeping mat on. The pack fits him well and does not seem to irritate him at all. He seems exuberant to wear the pack and gets very excited now when I even touch the pack when I’m around the house thanks for the great product

Good dog pack

I researched many packs before settling on this one, and I've been happy with it so far. Seems rugged enough to hold up to crashing through the woods (which we have tested a few times already). Doesn't shift very much, even though both my dogs are narrow chested. LOVE the ability to remove the majority of the pack easily while leaving the harness on. Water bladders are great, however they seem to be a little cumbersome to use. Just haven't gotten the knack of them yet.

Great dog pack

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Overall the best of many dog packs we've tried. The best feature is how well they fit the dogs. When you're doing multi day back country trips comfort it really important and these are the only packs that haven't given the dogs hot spots. A little over featured for my liking but still the best dog pack out there. Would like to see something more durable on that bottom of the packs since they only seem to last us for about 3 seasons, maybe some plastic 'armor' or spectra would hold up to the Huskies? Until I make my own dog pack these are what we'll use.
