Great pack!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Lola and I love this pack for her! The only change I would make would be to add a soft padding or sleeve for the torso strap - it rubs her armpits until they're raw and takes about a week to heal. Other than that, great pack! The removable qualities keep things easy when we go backpacking and take breaks and she wants to run around. The sides are big enough for her to carry her own food, water, bowls, and treats without being too bulgy.

I LOVE IT!!!!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I absolutely love this pack!!!! And the webmaster harness fits her like a glove. We are in competitive human tracking and working on basic SARS human tracking as well and the Harness portion is wonderful. She has a very deep chest and slender waste like most sight hounds. So all the harnesses we looked at did not fit well and would rub bad, but this one sits perfectly on her and was so adjustable. Also when the pack is attached to the harness, for when we are backpacking, It fits wonderfully and doesn't move (Note: does need to be weighted correctly much like my own pack). If you have a deep chested dog (such as a build close to sight hounds this harness/pack is for you. And the last thing is she is still growing and so we waited until we had a better idea on how big she would get.

Great pack

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Best design I've seen so far. Possibly more capacity then I need, it's a BIG Bag. Construction is great. I mostly use it to carry more water when out recreationally with my dogs. I do think it runs big to size, after making big adjustments to the webbing, moving some stuff and trimming a lot, it fits perfect. A very big plus for me is it doesn't come loose like most. Great buckles.

Brilliant

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

We've been devoted Ruffwear customers for years and Kai LOVES this pack as much as her TurnUp! This pack was made with strict attention to detail from the handle, webbing, and interior lashing and flopper-stoppers reduce load instability. Construction is solid as we took it up to the Nantahalas and GSM's for some fall hiking. She was able to sprint, climb and brush up against all kinds of brush and it held up. It's awesome that the pack can be detached from the harness for short halts. The compartments are roomy and the waterproofed zippers are a nice touch. Be sure to add a pack cover to your cart. It takes up very little room in the pack. Any time we pull the Palisades out of the closet, she spins around in circles and her eyes light up all ready to go for a hike! Get this for your dog. He or she will thank you for the fun extra exertion on your future outings!

excellent

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Great, great pack! The harness was easily adjustable to each body frame and light when the backpack was removed for the dogs to run around camp with it on. The pack clipped on very tight and didn't slosh around as we climbed. The onlly thing that could improve on the pack, though minor, is that the small fastener clips that clip the pack to the middle straps on the body were hard to get on and off. Maybe it'd be easier if you flipped the straps so the clip was outside to get it on and off easier. The pack was overall perfect--great pockets, the water bladders fit nicely, Good reflective features, and perfect size. Would you like some modeling pictures? :) Thanks!

Very Good

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I purchased the web master harness for my first SAR, HRD dog and was extremely happy with it. The Palisade pack was purchased for my wife's GSD and is The base harness fits well for long periods of tracking, and area searching, and the occasional skijoring. The top handle has been indispensable for keeping the dogs in the boat during recovery work. So on top of an excellent harness my wife has gotten a pack that is just as versatile, and well made. The fit is secure, construction solid, design well thought out. I will be up grading my current webmaster (still in great condition after several years) to the Palisade for the additional carrying options.

I have not so long ago purchased this backpack for an american staffordshire terrier. In connection with the construction of this dog, I was a little worried that he would not fit properly but fit perfectly... fortunately. Feels very solid and the waterbottles are on each side along the length against the body, which is nice and cool for the dog. Very satisfied!

Excellent Quality made harness and Bag

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I bought this pack because I go hiking/backpacking alot and I needed a solid made harness and pack that would not fall apart on me with heavy use. I have not had this bag very long but have had quite a few chances to put it to good use and it had been great so far. My dog took several plunges through heavy brush on a backpacking trip last week and there was not even a thread pull. They were not sticker bushes but I wouldnt let him run through that anyway. The bag was not on at the time or he probably wouldnt have even tried but the harness held up perfectly. the bag also got a chance to take some scrapes from branches and there is no fraying so far on them either. The Water bladders included are a nice plus and I have not had any problems with them cracking but I believe I recieved the softer bottles right away. I love the compression straps for the bags and the bags themselves have way more room than I will ever need for my dogs pack. He only carries an elk antler, a toy, and enough food to last a couple days along with his bowls and thats about it. The straps are easily adjustable and im not too sure if my pack is different but I dont find the clasps for the bags to be problematic at all. I used to use a different harness with no saddlebag and it would rub his armpit and I do not have that problem at all with this pack which is another great plus, my dog was able to run and jump around at a pace which to me seemed to be just the same as his normal pace, and the handle came in handy a few times for getting him up on ledges and over large rocks and fallen trees. The one thing I would like to see added is a leach attachment on the front of the harness where front triangle pad is. My aussie is great on a leash 98% of the time but sometimes he se's something he cant resist and he pulls a bit and I noticed with the top leash loop it still causes some discomfort and makes him caugh. I attached a nylon belt with a loop on the front to make my own and it worked perfectly, that is not really a CON just something I would like to see. I doubt I will ever need to buy another harness/pack again unless I get another dog.

Comfortable pack

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

We purchased this pack after having an REI brand pack where one of the buckles was at elbow level and caused some irritation and even came undone on occasion. The placement for these buckles, being on the harness, are great and eliminate that problem. Good padding, have not seen any irritation from use. I like the included water bottles, less bulky than packing a nalgene and easier to even out weight on both sides. The water bottles are hard to get completely dry after use, take a few days of sitting out and I put the handle of a wooden kitchen spoon in to maximize airflow into it. I like that you get 2 products in 1 - makes it well worth the price. Not simple to remove pack from harness while hiking (as they describe for over streams etc) because the 2 tiny buckles are not the easiest to maneuver. But I don't see this actually being a problem overall.

After I played with the packs and got them all adjusted for the girls to wear, we went for a walk through the woods. The packs were empty so I could see how they would manage with them. They did great and now they know the different walks/hikes we take if I go and grab their packs, that means a nice day hike. They love wearing them. The materials are quality, durable and will be long lasting. They are easy to put on when you can get the girls to settle down. I wish they came in different colors though. We've learned to be red.

We bought this backpack last year because we're planning on taking our dog on day/multi-day hikes with us. We've only done day hikes with her so far. We couldn't be more pleased, we're able to fit everything we need for her (food, collapsible bowl, water, etc). She is a skinny/long 55lbs dog and we got the size small (the straps are on the larger side of the small but it fits her perfectly. I rather that than a backpack that's too big and flops around). I also use it when I go running with her (to add a bit of weight). I strongly recommend this backpack.

Fantastic except for the bladders

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I just love my first Labrador's Palisade Pack so much that when I went shopping for the second dog's pack 3 years later, I didn't have to think twice about which one to get.... another Palisades. The first dog's pack has now lasted 3 years of long distance section hiking on the Appalachian Trail. Through storms, cold, heat, swimming, washing, and all those practice hikes. Stitching, buckles, everything. The newer pack has held up beautifully since Christmas when we purchased it. The second dog is extremely tough on it as he bushwhacks his way down the side of the trails. The pack takes a licking and keeps on going. Sadly, I discovered today that the ridged plastic bladders had cracks in them and where spitting water when I went to refill them before today's practice hike. I'd replaced the bladders in the first dog's pack with Platypus' due to the weight of the old style bladders. His Platypus bottles far exceed the quality of the new packs bladders.

Only taken this on day hikes so far with plans for multi-day trips soon. Easily fits all my dogs gear: bivy bowl, travel bed, included water pouches and food for several days. I got the medium for my 75-80 lbs furball upon ruffwear's suggestion. It fits perfectly even though it is at the larger end for the medium, but it is better than being too loose with the large size.

We bought this for our Golden Retriever just as he reached 14 months. I am glad we went with the size L-XL for him because, even though he is on the smaller side, it fits him really well with LOTS of room to grow! I also appreciate how easy it is to undo/redo the pack from the harness, with hands that have arthritis this was a huge help! I would agree with other reviewers about the micro clasps, however. We struggled a little bit with the initial adjustments, but now that it is adjusted to fit him it goes on with ease, and he also knows that the harness means he gets to go out! I look forward to using this pack on our trips and in our work as a therapy dog team!

Awesome for long treks, but wieghty

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I bought this pack for a month long Appalachian Trail trek with my dog. 275miles. It is fantastic. Easy to balance, easy to pack and so roomy that my dog can not only carry her own food and gear, but some of mine too. The only thing I don't like is the weight. Backpacking gear nowadays is so technical and lightweight, I would love to see the same for my dog. Also, a fitted rain cover would rock too, I had to make one work with an oversized pack cover. Overall though, this pack was the talk of the trail!

We use this pack everytime we go out. It is so convenient. I am able to leave the pack part in the car and the harness in the house. It is easy to have her get in and out of the car. Then, just attach the pack and go. I haven't used the micro clasps, only the larger ones, but her pack stays balanced. She also seems much more comfortable with this system. It has made our life so much easier. Thank you so much, Ruffwear!

tops

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

We went with the L/XL for our 130lb and still growing newfoundland. I have had it for over a month now and have used it on every other walk with the newfie. The orchestration to suit up the dog is a bit tricky at first and sadly its still a little tricky a month later. The biggest qualm i have is with the micro sized snap locks to attach the saddle bags to the harness on the sides are just about the most difficult thing to do with a long haired dog. I would like to see a revision of these micro clasps as this design evolves over time. The clips do a fantastic job of keeping the saddle bags in place through long walks and we have begun leaving one of the clips attached and only worrying about one clip when its time to suit up. The saddle bags look almost tiny on any of the giant breed dogs. Really like the size of them as he can now carry liter nalgene water bottles and food to last a weekend with no problem. Overall its a great product and I would recommend it to everyone who needs to give a working dog a daily job!

Awesome replacement bladders

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Hi all, This is actually my second review on this product. I'm writing another one because the water bladders in my pack developed a tear and started to leak. I contacted Ruffwear about this and they just sent me new replacement bladders. They are now a softer vinyl and should survive constant use better than the previous rigid plastic ones. I really like that Ruffwear replaced my bladders free of charge when I was more than willing to pay for my replacements. This is a quality company with quality people working for it making a quality product. Which is rare at times now a days so when it is found it should be pointed out and praised.

I just got the pack for her less than a month ago and we have only used it on long day hikes to get her used to it. She adjusted quickly and it doesn't seem to char her anywhere. Some of the buckles are hard to get to and it's not so easy to seperate the pack from the harness quickly. It hasplentyof padding and I love that she can help carry her own water-- we livein red rock desert and most hikes require a lot of water. I got a medium and it fits her just fine. She has the large boxer muscle chest but only weighs 65 lbs. Whereas right in the middle between med and large and the medium works great and Even has some additional adjusting space. Only thing left is to try.iron a full over night.

Wonderfully Rugged

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

We've had the pack for ruffly a year now and I'm still impressed. When that harness comes out he knows we're getting ready for an adventure. We've gone on countless day hikes with the pack. He gets to carry his own bowl, food and water. The pack detaches from the harness for those times when he just can't help but go for a swim. If I could change one thing it would be the clips that attach the pack to the belly strap. It's a great feature which prevents the pack from flopping around, however the clips frequently get small debris in them and prevent me from easily unbuckling them. A different design for these clips would be the only improvement I can think of.

I just purchased two new Palisade packs for my dogs. I also have an older Palisades pack and I always liked it. My Swissies weigh more then a hundred pounds and I go with them on competitive hikes organized by the club. The hikes are 10 miles and they have to carry a load of 20% of there own weight for 10 miles. That adds up to be 20 - 30 pounds of food and water per dog. The dogs love to carry the packs, it distributes the weight evenly. What I most like on your product is that one can take the pack off while the harness stays on. This is very convenient during stops along the way to give the dog some water and food. The new packs also feature some good improvements over the older ones.

Great construction

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I have had previous versions for my other service dogs. This is basically my purse, and I like some things and would change others. The pockets on the top make it difficult to place and sew patches on the bags.. My solution was to make a flap that covers the zipper with my patches. The underside loops are difficult to use and open. I would use a strong elastic... I miss the back hook on the center of the pack to the vest. The four buckles on the sides seem upside down for ease of use. Getting it off and on is a big headache with a squirming puppy. Trying to size it with the new belly straps is tough on the human but better for the dog... Getting the strap thru a larger belly pad would be easier. Like the Velcro to keep it centered. Love that she can wear just the vest to travel and kennel... We use the ring to seatbelt her leash when in the car giving her better safety precautions than a collar...liked the old version with inside zipper pockets for water storage... It protected my things from the bags leaking and gave me hidden storage when traveling, that kept my passport that much safer. We love RUFFWEAR and would never chose another brand... Guess I am just really spoiled and set in my old ways with my last bag... It travelled miles and lasted through two dogs working everyday. Thanks for equipment that makes our lives easier.

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I love this pack! I bought it in the hopes of giving my 63lb 7mth old mastiff pit bull mix puppy a job. We have currently gone on beach adventures and hikes with this pack and it has been wonderful. Gideon use to never tire and just be full of energy even after an hour long walk, not only does this pack help him work some of his energy out, but it also has calmed him down remarkably. He use to pull a lot on the leash, eager to get going and was actually hard to handle. Now, he walks along side, is calmer, and listens to every command given. The pack has withstood beach sand and the hot weather of the island real well. (I'm currently a vet student on the island of St. Kitts) It has plenty of pockets for treats, a bowl, his favorite toy, and the water bladders are extremely helpful with the heat of the island. I would recommend this pack for anyone who's dog is needing a job or who would like to take their dog on hikes or trips.

Blue's (65 lbs) first overnight, long-haul, to Owl's Head was made much more enjoyable with his using this pack. I 'trialed' him on several short distance walks (1-5 miles) with the pack ( weighted with 5 lbs.) first to get a feel for weight distribution, etc. He behaved normally. During the long hike I weighted him with 11 total pounds and he couldn't have cared less. The construction is of very good quality and the ease of removing the bags while leaving the harness was a particular benefit. I highly recommend this pack. I kept everything that I needed to get to quickly in there, along with his food.

NOT for Staffies.

Would you recommend this product?.: No

We had dreams of doing many long hikes with our girl in her pallisades pack, but those dreams came to a screeching halt after day 1 on the Chilkoot. We'd tested the pack out before and everything was fine, but for some reason- maybe the weight wasn't distributed properly- the bags chaffed her armpits raw after just 3 miles of a 33 mile hike. The other bummer was that we noticed the pack was actually splitting, after having only been worn for about 12 miles of hiking! The reality is that this pack is just not suitable for a staffie. For a staffie- weight is a real concern since the dog is so light and you should only let her carry 15-20% of her body weight- It's too heavy to begin with (2.5lbs), which really cuts in to the amount of cargo you can carry (max 7lbs for her), and it's pretty wide and long (we have a small). I would imagine this pack would be great on a bigger dog with longer hair (less chaffing). For staffie owners- I think you have to give up the dream of having detachable paniers and go for another style of pack that's lighter.

Good and not so good

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I have 1 the older style palisades and 1 new style. The new style changed the water delivery system and I love that as my old packs bladders failed after 2 times so only one dog can pack water now.... The new style pack has less cushion around the lower straps which is a bummer to me but the dog doesn't seem to mind so far. In the old pack you could isolate the water bladder with a zippered compartment and the new style lacks the zipper so I found the bladder can flop out of its compartment and into the storage compartment. I would like to see the under webbing design changed to something more like the double back harness because when I have to pick them up over ruff terrain they seem uncomfortable. I also found myself adjusting the packs more than I would like because the pack can flop over from one side to the other when my dog has to do any jumping or decides to roll on the ground. I would like to see a way to secure the packs down so this doesn't happen. I use paracord now from the underside of one bag to the other to keep the packs down. The overall construction of the bags are great and they have yet to tear and are easy to clean. also the old bag says palisades in reflective letters and the new bag lacks that lettering but still has a reflective design that is easy to see at night when I shine a light on it.

So great!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I have a Siberian Husky with a lot of energy. She loves to hike and camp so this pack serves three great uses: 1) On shorter hikes she carries 2 liters of water just for exercise and to tire her out more. Having the weight slows her down slightly and I know that when we get home she will be content to sleep for the rest of the day. 2)She carries her own food and water for longer hikes which is great so I don't have to save space in my pack for her water. 3) I love that I can clip the pack off and she still has a secure comfortable harness on. I can relieve her of the weight when we are resting so she can play and explore and she is still easy to leash, lift, and walk. The little straps to keep the bags from flopping are slightly difficult to acces and clip, I wonder if there is an easier way to design them... Otherwise, we love this pack!

Excellent Quality / Rigidity

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I was looking for a pack that is ergonomic for my pooch. I found that many packs sat behind the shoulders and onto their back. This pack is perfect for him, it sits on his front shoulders where he can handle his gear better. The harness itself is very useful helping him overcome larger obstacles, enabling us to access trails/sights that would otherwise make it very difficult to get to with a dog. It lasts through our trip with him running through branches, brushing up against rocks. rolling, the pack withstood the abuse. Very impressed with the innovation of this pack and would recommend it to anyone. He is a 66 lbs dog, with a 30" chest, a medium fit him nicely. Would love to see a Palisades Version 2, where the harness Belly Webbing is from the Double Back Harness.

Sweet Pack

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

So far this has been a great pack. As my dog is only 11 months old, I haven't loaded it down with much yet. One benifit is that the pack seems to keep her from running back and forth on trail. She seems to know that when she has the pack on, it's going to be a long walk. She will follow or lead nearby. The clip-off saddle bags are also great as I can easily take them off when we stop for a break without having to reajust the harness. The robust harness and handle are also fantastic as I can pick her up one handed to help her over boulder barricades that she can't get over. She is 55lbs and a medium fits wonderfully. Only complaint: I wish the saddle bags were a bit smaller (10 L).

Terrific Piece of Gear...

I have the Palisades Pack and love it. I would like to get the DoubleBack Harness. I sometimes have to hoist my Labbie up moderate heights and don't trust the snaps on the Palisades Harness. Of course, I remove the pack when I do this. However, if I use the DoubleBack I can't attach the Palisades pack to it. OK, My question/suggestion is could you make a DoubleBack that you could attach the Palisades pack to? I think it would add another use to the DoubleBack, making it a much more attractive option. Right now, when I get the DoubleBack, I plan to add connecting snaps myself so I can use the Palisades Pack with it. Please consider this idea. Thanks

The bags seem to slip to one side or the other when loaded down. I find myself adjusting my dog's pack to keep him balanced. Some additional ventilation on the harness it's self would have been nice. I have a flat coated retriever who has a tendency to get hot anyways. Other then that, I like how the pack is easy to remove, without any Velcro to get stuck in long hair. All in all, it's been a great pack for the value.

Fantasic overall but a bit large

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I originally ordered this for my female, I loved the idea of having a removable pack that left the harness on. The size small harness fit her fantastic, but the pack was HUGE on her! Even empty if was so overly cumbersome it was nearly as big as her. So I gave it to her brother and ordered her just the Web Master Harness. While still a size small, he is tall and long just very thin chested. The pack fits him much more approprietly. I ran him thorugh the mud and out hiking and he moved like it wasn't there. I definitly recomend the product but for larger dogs, it's a bit much for small dogs.

Poor design, great idea!

Would you recommend this product?.: No

When all the gear is stowed in the small packs, there is too much moving of the saddle bags themselves. A number of times the bags ended up on the same side of the dog and nearly to the dog off the trail. Water and Mud soaked through the material of the bags. The bags themselves should have been bigger for better storeage of gear.

Almost perfect!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Amazing pack. At first I was a little put off about the weight of it, the material is a little thicker than expected. BUT, it paid off, it survived the first hike even with extensive rubbing on saw palmetto, cactus, sawgrass, and what seems like literally every plant down here with thorns. Looci is a border collie mix, took to the harness and pack right away. That being said, initial adjustment of the harness could be a little tricky if you have an uncooperative dog, but once it's set you'll probably never have to readjust. My main concern was whether the pack would overheat Looci in the hot Florida sun. The material between the packs is mesh, and the harness material is lined with something that seems breathable. He still overheated a little bit, in the mid day sun, but that's to be expected. Otherwise it didn't seem to affect him too much temperature wise. Everything all the other reviews say is spot on, so I'll focus on what I would like changed. First, inside one of the bags a large instruction sheet is sewn into the pack. It was pretty annoying to cut out as I didn't want to compromise the pack's otherwise perfect stitching. Also I would love to see a belay loop, kind of what looks like is on the doubleback harness. As an option to use a carabiner. Since Looci is still in training I used some 7mm rope and a biner to make a long leash, worked great, but the metal D ring on the harness is not the best mounting point for a biner.

I have an approach pack that I love except that my dogs head is block shaped and doesn't fit easily through the neck opening, making it hard while camping to take on and off. That's why I love the palisades pack! The harness is highly adjustable -fit well with no chafe points. The bag laying on top of that allows me to take the pack off for rest/relaxation on the trail. The water bladders included are nice with te angled corner spout. And the amount of space is certainly sufficient. I can't wait to take this out on a multiway trip! My dog and I are both very pleased!

He now carries all of his supplies when we go on hikes in the hills or picnicking in the park. And some of my stuff as well like my tablet phone and keys. I really like that once we get to where we are going the pack easily clips off and he can stay in the harness and still play and run around. Even when out walking he is more focused and on the job when wearing the pack or just the harness. All in all I really like this pack and so does Gibson. I look forward to many more hikes and adventures with this pack.

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Living in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Maya and I have gone on over 200 hikes over the past 5 years. Most of the hikes are 1/2 day to one day hikes. Maya has always been equipment with the Palisades Pack (Small Size / Maya Weighs 50 lbs). The pack has enabled me to only carry water as Maya carries everthing else. The bag still allows her to run and case critters. After five years, the pack is still in perfect condition and just needs to be cleaned every 10-20 hikes. The pack is easy to use, looks great, rides perfect. The pack is easy to balance. The pack has never caused any physical problems to Maya. During steep rock climbs and climbs through icy conditions, the pack harness has come in handy either by me helping Maya over the rocks or by Maya helping me when I start to slip and slide on the ice (Maya always leads). Maya has had many compliments on her Palisades Pack.

My female is a little 35 lb GSD mix and it was her first camping excursion with the family. This allowed me to comfortably lift her over obstacles like tree trunks and large rocks in order to take her farther on the hikes than my family was able to bring their large breed dogs (couldn't lift over obstacles, too big). She didn't appear to be in any discomfort nor did she show signs of being afraid she'd be dropped, she held perfectly still until she was placed on the new surface. Despite long walks the harness didn't rub or irritate her anywere, the reflector strips are incredibly bright, and the harness was very sturdy, no damadge desptite rough brush and terrain. The pack was a bit big on her despite the harness fitting perfect, but it was very easy-on and easy-off.

When the dog runs, the velcro comes looose and the backs are flapping all over.

I have owned other dog packs before and they never seemed that great, I do a lot of hiking and backpacking and enjoy taking my dog. I ordered this pack and have been blown away at the quality and thought put into the design. First off, it has a harness system that you fit to your dog and then attach the pack to, or you can even use the heavy duty harness on its own (in camp, etc.). The pack attaches securely and snugly, with different tensioning devices for a perfect fit. I have a huge 100lbs Lab, and ordered the Large/X-large for him. This thing is so cool, it even includes two water reseviors with there own pockets within each side of the pack! I would highly recommend this pack if you are in the market for one, this is hands down the best pack I have ever come across!!

Worth the money

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

This pack is worth the money--I especially like that the packs can be removed, making it very versatile. It can hold enough food and dog gear for a few days camping and it balanced well so that our dog can walk for long distances with it on without it shifting a lot. I actually credit the harness with saving our dog's neck, literally. She's lunged after game on the trails and very likely would have hurt her neck if she had just been wearing her collar. Also, when hiking, this it is great to be able to pick her up by the handle if necessary (for example, we found shattered glass along a trail and my husband was able to pick her up, all 60 lbs of her, and carry her like a purse over the broken glass, and she was completely fine with it and the harness held up great). The fit can be tricky--we have a medium for our 60 lb, barrel chested shepherd mix, but I wish Ruffwear would make more customizable harnesses for dogs with large chests and small waists (greyhounds, shepherds, dobies, etc). Also, I do wish they made some other colors, however, this is extremely minor, just something to note. I highly recommend this pack--it's worth the extra money to have the removable packs, you won't regret it.

This pack is compact yet roomy, sturdy and seems of high quality construction. I like that I can cinch it down to minimize the bulk and profile of it. The harness is made to fit very nicely and is very adjustable. My only complaint is that there is a bit of slack at the clips that hold the pack to the harness. This means that the weight of the pack (even with very little in it) tends to pull the pack backwards a bit, and I have to often nudge it back up as we walk.

We purchased this pack because we do a lot of hiking and some backpack camping, and we wanted our pup to carry some of his own food and water. We chose the removable packs because we also do a lot of boating trips and wanted the harness without the packs to more easily fish our dog out of the water when necessary. It took a little while for our dog to get used to walking on uneven ground with the packs, but I think he's getting the hang of it. The compression straps help to keep the bags close to the dog so they don't bounce around too much. My one complaint, that I've seen other people mention too, is that the tiny clips on the bottoms of the bags are difficult to attach to the harness when the harness is already on the dog. Besides that, I give this product 2 thumbs up.

we used the palisades pack on about a 40 miles section of the Coloardo trail outside of Durango and the pack performed excellent - the only pain is the tiny little snaps on the loop that secures the bottom of the packs to the chest harness strap - they are such a pain that they prevent removing the packs more often during rest stops. So far, so good. The saddle seems quite stout but the neck hole is a bit small and hard to adjust. Absolutely the Best!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I have been using versions of this backpack for 5 years with 2 different Mobility Service Dogs. They are used every day and wear like iron, look like new, even with frequent washing. The great removeable packs are so helpful for restaurants, where I can remove them from my already big dog to allow him to get under the table without problems. This version is an improvement on the last one, with the extra lashing hardware below the snap buckle on the chest strap, which helps to hold the adjustment of the strap firm, rather than slipping often as it did on the last model. The whole harness fits better and more snugly in the chest, and puts the weight a little further up the shoulders (toward the neck) than the last model. I greatly appreciate the extra pockets/zippers on the top of the backpack, which are very handy for smaller items such as your keys that you want to easily get to. I believe RuffWear backpacks are the best out there, and worth every penny. A good improvement on an already fantastic backpack!

I have a hard core Border Collie mix, and over the past 2 years we have seriously put this pack and harness through the wringer. We have used it for just about everything: Kayaking, Hiking, Tracking, Climbing, Biking, Sledding, Training, etc. She has caught it in barbed wire without it ripping, went swimming without it stretching, and gone all day without it rubbing. All the while, she looks smart and spiffy, gets tons of complements, and at the end of the day, I can spray it off and it looks like new. Most recently, we hiked Grandfather Mt. in NC and the harness was invaluable for helping her up and down ladders since it is strong enough to carry her full weight. On top of all this, the pack is extremely adjustable. Although I got it for my 45lb Border Collie, I have also used without any problems with my 75lb Golden Retriever and my 30lb 4 month old lab puppy. This is Honestly the best back out there and worth every penny. I will never get a different one!

Outstanding

This is truly a solid solution for the extended hike. The buckles are much stronger than the smaller packs and the fit is perfect. Bonus that you can just pull the bags and have a harness for quick walks.

In the process of training Monty to carry his own gear. First expedition will be 3 day backpack in the Smokey Mountains. Would love to see an additional leash ring on the chest. When leashed on the top, the pack can pull to the side pretty easy if he decides to go check out a tree :)
