Swamp Cooler™
Cooling Vest
 5 (based on 82 reviews) | Write a Review
The Ruffwear Swamp Cooler uses natural evaporative cooling to keep your dog cool. Soak it in cold water, wring it out, and fasten around your dog. Evaporative cooling exchanges the dog's heat as water evaporates from the coat's reservoir. The Swamp Cooler's light color is designed to reflect heat from the sun. Combined with the evaporative cooling effect, the Swamp Cooler keeps dogs comfortable when temperatures rise. Auto-lock buckles on each side of the jacket provide easy on/off.

Excellent - works very well!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I was skeptical of the effectiveness of this product until I read the many reviews and decided to give it a try. I bought one for both my dogs (black labs); but have one dog who seems to suffer more in the heat so was very hopeful it would make him more comfortable. Primary use of the coats is on the boat as Jack, the one who gets more overheated, loves to lie on the back deck, rather than under the shelter of the wheel house and he pants like mad. I soaked him down and soaked the coat down before putting it on and it worked great. He stayed cool & comfortable the entire time we were underway, on a four hour trip up the coast. I did re-wet the coat a couple times when it seemed to dry out and that helped as well. I purchased the large for both dogs (78 and 72 lbs respectively) and they fit fine.

Love it

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

We love the swamp cooler. Xena loves to be outside whenever we are but with her mostly black coat and medium hair she gets hot fast! Now she can enjoy spending time outside and stay cool. We have been especially using this on the boat which she can now enjoy confortably, she swtiches between the swamp cooler when just relaxing to her life vest to go swimming,

We were looking for a cooling vest to help our 10-year-old GSD and 12-year-old Beagle cope with the hot and humid days during the summer. This vest has been wonderful for both of them. It is extremely effective and easy to use, and we had looked at several different types of vests. Bravo!

Love This

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

My big lab loves this. I often take her mountain biking and if its even slightly warm outside I worry she'll get dehydrated or over heated. This cool jacket seems to help keep her cool. At least she stops less often to get a drink or jump in every pool of water to cool off. Well worth the investment. Also, it fits great and is long enough to fully cover her back and keep her cool. She is no stranger to Ruffwear jackets and doesn't seem to mind them a bit.

Positive

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Another great Ruffwear product! My dog is 60 pounds and barrel chested and the medium fits her perfectly. The coat does a good job keeping her cool, but does dry a little faster than I would like, but I guess the fact that the water is evaporating means that it is working. We have used it for keeping cool on walks during the day and it has helped keep the panting down quite a lot. She also wears in on car rides, which is very helpful (my car has no AC so we ride windows down) and it seems very comfortable on her. The only other con is that it gets dirty fast, but the fact that it is light gray is probably why!

Excellent

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

My IW is black and gets hot quickly in the heat and humidity of a Virginia summer. We tend to hike early in the morning but even before 8am my dog is looking for shade. Since using the coat he is obviously much more comfortable. It stands up to off trail work and is easy to recharge on the go. He wears the largest size and it would be great to have maybe a few more inches of length but seems to be just the ticket!

I have to admit I was a bit skeptical that this would work. My wheaten gets hot easily so I have to keep his coat trimmed short in the summer and wet him down a lot. Now we can pant less!!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I'm an outdoor guide, and Stella works with me in the field. We hike nearly every day, and summers in southern Utah are blistering hot. Stella wears her swamp cooler under her backpack and carries extra water for drinking and wetting the swamp cooler. Seems to be effective at keeping her more comfortable--she spends less time darting from patch of shade to patch of shade. Unfortunately, on long hikes it's hard to keep the cooler wet without carrying a lot of extra water. It's dry within 40 min or so, thus becoming markedly less effective. It's also made rides in my non-air conditioned car or in the back of a pickup truck markedly more pleasant.

TEN tail wags for functionality and style

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Hmm... skeptical but its first trial was 92 F and it was amazing how cool it was under the vest near her neck. Normally heat rises from her back and tail droops and she heads for shade. Note: it is drippy so recommend putting it on joutside. Also it could use another set of straps near back to secure near tail end of vest as it torques some with movement. Gives my dog a fighting chance in the summer. We carry water and limit walks to opposite ends of day but wow -- this thing works.

I started to test the harness yesterday and I see a clear difference in my walks with my pug, who suffers greatly from the heat now claiming ill to walk longer and it will not even drink. My canine companion(s): Belgian Tervuren, mix

Very good

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

This product does make a difference. We had a very hot SAR training session (near 90 by 9:00 am). I kept the dogs in the shade with the swamp cooler on until it was our turn to run. They were cool and not panting heavily. On our regular walks, the swamp cooler keeps them cool for about 1hr before it needs to be recharged with more water. The recovery time when we get back to AC is minimal compared to when they weren't wearing them. This is an evaporative coat. This means it has it's limitations in humid weather. We are just starting to get into humid weather so I haven't been able to determine the limit of it's effectiveness. I air dry them in between wearings and wet them and put in the fridge overnight for extra cooling in the am. Even with the limits that humiidity places on the coat, the dogs are still cooler with than without (judging by the rate of panting and length of recovery time).

Amazing

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I was a bit doubtful if this would work, but I took a chance and I am so happy I did! My dog gets overheated very easily, and this has really limited us for longer hikes, runs, and playing outside in the summer. With her swamp cooler on, she can be outside more comfortably and for much longer periods of time. She isn't a huge fan of getting wet, so I have to make sure that it isn't dripping wet when I put it on. But she doesn't mind it at all and forgets it is on. I put more water on it pretty regularly when we are outside and along with water breaks this keeps her cool throughout the hike or run. This product has really allowed me to do a lot more with her during the summer instead of leaving her inside in the air conditioning, which I hate to do. I don't live in the warmest part of the country, but multiple times each week we use it throughout the summer months. It was an excellent investment.

Exactly what we needed

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

We used ours a little differently. My elderly dog Koko was extra sensitive to heat, and would have seizures if he got warmer than 27C (80F). I don't have air conditioning in my house. To keep his temperature down, I bought this vest for him to wear in the house as well as outside. I wet it as instructed, and had fans blowing all through the house for the evaporation. He did not have a single seizure that very hot summer of 2012. He passed away in February of 2013. This vest gave us time and lowered our stress, so we could properly enjoy the summer. Thank you.

TOTALLY AMAZING!!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

My girl is 5 years old. The 95 degree heat and 100 % humidity of the Low Country in summer knocks all the energy out of her and real walks didn't exist in summer. Just the dog park and lot's of hose spraying. Before I got this cooling vest for her, I was lucky if I could get her to walk more than 10 feet before she would just lay down and pant. Now, we can go on our 2-4 mile walks like we do in the winter with no problem at all!! When we take a break for water, I pour some water on the back of the vest too. Now I can make sure she doesn't put on her usual 'summer weight.' She loves the vest and comes right to me when she sees it ready to go. I do use a harness to walk her and found one that works fairly well with the vest. I put it under the vest - can't remember what it's called but it has a mesh chest front, sherpi sleeves on the front leg straps and you cinch it down on top (no buckles). The only thing I wish the vest had is a slot on top for a harness to slip thru. Wish I had discovered the vest last summer, but glad I have it now!! I would highly recommend this vest for any dog that has a problem with the heat.

Max and I hiked 3 miles on the Hawes Trail in the Lower Salt River Valley today. 85 plus degrees in the high desert abd very little shade. It was Max's first time wearing the Swamp Cooler. Max hardly panted and he did not run from shade spot to shade spot. I recharged the vest twice on the trail. Max did not get hot. The vest really works. A friend's dog with us on the trail was panting hard in the heat. The difference was so obvious between the two dogs that my friend went straight out after the hike and bought a vest for their dog.

great!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

feel free to ignore the other negative reviews of this product, especially the review from the other newfoundland owner. i purchased this for my 135lb 14month old newfie and can say that it is a fantastic product. a presoak of the jacket while on the pup allows for a great start to a hot and humid day. with temperatures reaching 95 over the past two weeks our dog has been happy and active with this jacket on. since we realize that this jacket is not magic and would require a constant rewetting to allow for the proper cooling, we have been sure to bring extra water bottles to soak the jacket mid walk and have been sure to allow a good number of water breaks while working/ playing with our dog. the jacket is wonderful so far and has allowed our dog to be active in warm weather. XL for our dog was the right choice. be warned that with a wet jacket on your dog, your legs will most likely get wet to (at least with the large breeds) most people have realized that the jacket is for cooling, but we did have a few negative comments about jacket on a dog in summer, but those type of people are easy to ignore.

We recommend this product and would purchase again. In our 100 degree desert heat, the cooling vest needs to be refreshed with water to reboot the cooling effect. We bought this vest for our Frenchie as summer began here in Santiago and the dry heat and blazing sun had him incapacitated. We couldn't even make it all the way around 1 block on a walk without him either vomiting from the heat, or laying down in the shade and refusing to continue. With this vest he is able to make it through the entire walk no problem, and he loves it so much he won't even let us take it off when we get home! This has been a lifesaver for us, and I recommend it to anyone else with a frenchie. I read comments that the neck was too small to fit other frenchies big heads, but we had no problem at all.

Amazing

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

We just recently moved to sunny Colorado, with our black tri-colored Aussie. On a recent hike, the temps weren't terribly high, but it was really sunny and I noticed Cody was struggling to find shade, and was really dragging. I thought something was wrong with her, until I realized that the sun was baking her black fur, even though the temperature was only 60 degrees. I decided to purchase the Swamp Cooler vest, even though Cody is generally OK in the heat. Wow- what a difference!! She instantly had more energy and can run farther with less fatigue when wearing it. We recently took a trip to Moab, and she ran 25 miles in the desert without struggling at all because she was wearing the vest. It didn't even require a lot of water- just 3 good soaks kept her cool for our entire 12 mile run. When we stopped, I could put my hand underneath the vest and feel the difference in temperature of her fur. Everyone asked about it too- nothing like seeing a dog in clothes in the middle of the desert!

Reliable

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

My dogs have short hair and can sunburn. I will also add my dogs HATE water! When we go motorcycle riding temperatures vary a lot. We purchased the swamp coolers because we were traveling in central California with triple digit temperatures. Once the swamp coolers were wet Minnie and Haley didn't mind putting them on or wearing the swamp cooler. They would tolerate water being poured on the outside. The swamp cooler seemed to keep their body temperature lower than without the swamp cooler. I gave this 4 stars because improvements could be made. Ruff wear needs to think versatile like Columbias Bugaboo jacket, lots of layers and all versatility. In addition to the swamp cooler Minnie and Haley are secured on the motorcycle with the Ruffwear Master Harness-thus two layers. It would be worth A LOT of money if the Master Harness would have: 1 - zip in swamp cooler 2 - zip in insulated waterproof jacket 3 - zip in fleece jacket 4 - zip in rain jacket 5 - snap on pack 6 - with the basic harness structure that can be worn just as webbing

My Dog LOVES This

The Swamp Cooler came on a rare hot AND humid afternoon, which seemed the perfect time to give it a good test. Having my dog wear a coat in the desert in the summer seems counter-intuitive, but we forged ahead anyway and were VERY pleased with the results. I checked under the coat multiple times during our hour walk and every time found my dog to be cool. In fact, she thought acted like it was one of those lovely cool Fall mornings, and not sweltering. We both highly recommend this product.

Love it...BUT....

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Kirby is a very furry but active Pomeranian mix. He doesn't like the heat at all, and Colorado's summers can climb over 90 degrees quite often. I use the swamp cooler when Kirby and I go on hikes together, and he seems to be a lot more comfortable with it on. My only suggestion for this coat would to have a hole for a harness clip. I'm sure this coat is not intended to be used with a harness, but I feel more comfortable with Kirby attached to one. Right now I use a harness OVER the swamp cooler, but I would like to use one underneath. So, perhaps a small hole or zippered opening in the middle of the coat to allow a harness clip be a new feature on the next swamp cooler. For reference, Kirby is a Pomeranian Mix and he is 20lbs. I bought a size XS and it fits very well.

Best product of its kind!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Great product for outdoors! My pup is sensitive to the heat and can't be out for more than 10 minutes in anything over 85 degrees. With his cooler on, he can comfortably go all day! It is comfortable enough for play and for work. He is a servicve dog so I have a harness and vest I use with him at times and it fits fairly well over the top of the cooler. My one real problem with it is that I wish it dripped less. Sinc he accompanies me everywhere, I do not feel comfortable letting him wear it indoors because of the wet trail it can lead, that is not noticeable outdoors. This should not be a problem for most people though! Awesome overall! Definitely recommend as the best product of its kind on the market!

Exceeded expectations

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I read all the glorious reviews here, and decided to try this jacket. I thought it would keep my spoiled Lab a little cooler and less unhappy in heat. Boy, I never expected it to work THIS good. He is cool and comfortable for hours, never pants, including in a car. In a few hours I just re-wet it, and he's good for the rest of the day. This product is awesome. Thank you, Ruffwear!

My dog has worn this vest the past two days during a period of high temps and humidity. His recovery after a walk is amazing. In fact, he is fine when he gets home. Previously, he would lay on the tile floor for quite awhile. I take a water bottle filled with cold water to add to the vest while we walk. Worth every penny.

I made this purchase for my son's and daughter's dogs, after using it on my dogs last summer and this. It really makes a difference in their ability to exercise in the heat. I'm happy to see that the color has been changed. The grey should be less likely to show dirt, although it is very easy to wash.

Every day we're stopped asked what the coat is all about and where to purchase one!!! I love sharing the information with other dogs lovers. Thank you for making such a wonderful product.

very helpful in dry heat

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Pooh is 15+ years old now and doesn't tolerate high temperatures they way he used to. We just went through a week of over 100 degree temperatures without any worry of overheating on walks or while in the car. It definitely helps a lot. We should have purchased one of these years ago! I am a veterinarian and I recommend them to all of my clients who enjoy hiking and camping with their dogs in the summer months. The only change in design that would be helpful is a slot in the top where a harness loop could be passed through.

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Harley has a thick coat and overheats easy. I always have to cut our walks or bike rides short due to concerns about heat exhaustion. With Thelma being younger and more athletic I usually need to choose between exercising them separately or compromise in between their two levels. They both wear the swamp coats and I've noticed a large increase in Harley's endurance & overall comfort. Thelma is also happier being cooler. My littlest one Queso will be trying on the xx-small since he has the thickest coat of them all. Hopefully it fits!

This works even better than I had thought it would. My 2 wear them in the car to keep them cool until we get to the park for a run. I take them off at the park since they swim. I put the swamp coolers in a bucket with cold water. I put them back on when we get back in the car. They fit well too. I got a lrg for 60 lb Maxie and Med for 50 lb Sophie.

Pricey but worth it

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

My dog and I are training to go backpacking and he becomes concerningly warm following a 6 mile hike in the summer months. Ice packs are not useful when you are on the trail for days at a time, so this is an ingenious idea. I carry a camelbak and rehydrate the vest as needed. Often, it's several hours before that is required. My only complaint is the price. It's totally worth it in the end, but I still wish there was a more cost-effective alternative.

Fair

Would you recommend this product?.: No

I found that the swamp cooler dries out fairly quickly and this defeats its purpose. I can't say it really helped to keep my dog cool. I would prefer an ice pack insert vest where the cool would last longer but have been unable to find one large enough. I would not recommend to other Newfoundland dog owners. The XL did fit well.

I dampen it and put in freezer before a morning run. Jack is 95% black, so in Florida the poor dog is a heat magnet. This jacket does help to reduce the heat the dog endures. BUT..... I want to run with a harness not a collar, and the swamp jacket requires a harness. I use ruffwear running collar and lead, but want to use a harness with the swamp jacket.

Incredible

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

We're going into our second summer with the Swamp Cooler and I'm even more impressed than I was last year. Hana runs from every other harness, colar, etc. that we have but when I get the Swamp Cooler out she stands still. I thought I was doing her a favour by taking it off right after our walks, as I do the harness, but if she's not ready, she noses it until I put it back on. It's incredible. I can see that she walks faster and seems less tired while wearing it, but I'm impressed that it works so well the dog associates it with being more comfortable. Great product, but I agree that printing 'cooler' on it (with icicles on the letters) would help stop the critical stares.

My canine companion(s): Shiloh Shepherd

Fantastic

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I bought this jacket for my 9 month old Shiloh. She loves to run through the woods, rock climb, you name it. But, we had a very hot day and after a 15 min SLOW walk, I almost had to carry her home. She is almost entirely black and has a long, thick coat. She doesn't mind wearing anything and after I put this jacket on her she was ready to keep going for hours. Then, if we pass a creek, I just soak it in the cold water and put it back on her. It's made so it doesn't make your dog wet (maybe a bit damp) so putting her in my back seat to go home wasn't a big deal. This is a GREAT product! Don't let your dog get a heatstroke! It'll cost you more than keeping your active buddy cool for $54!!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Jessie has multiple liver shunts and was not expected to live past a few month of life, however she is a strong willed little girl and is now 4 y/o. She can not take the heat, it really makes her sick. We live in So. CA. and it gets hot here in the summer. We have been searching for things to keep her cool and came upon this swamp cooler vest and thought we would give it a try. She used it last weekend when the temp here was 103* and we were so happy that the vest worked beautifully. It truly is a life saver for Jessie. She will be able to spend some time outside with us this summer thanks to this vest.

Hovawarts are referred to as an "all weather" breed in Germany, but I doubt it gets up to 100+F there. My black, furry boy Levi gets hot in any weather over 75F. The Swamp Cooler keeps Levi going with the same energy as he would have on a cool day. Took him hiking one day when it was 94F in the shade. No Problem. This will truly help him get through our hot Sacramento area summers. Thanks Ruffwear!

Fantastic

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

It works great. At first I was wondering how well; the top layer drys out pretty quickly (Phoenix, AZ...very warm & dry) but the bottom remains moist. Putting my hand beneath and onto her coat, it feels cool to the touch. The combo of the cool & moist material with the light reflective color proves to be outstanding for dogs who seek the shade. The bottom line: Mya walks more smoothly and remains more energized with the coat on than without. One last thing...people will ask you why you have a jacket on your dog or just look at you like you're a moron. I wonder if Ruffwear should put a big "COOLER!!!" on the side.

It really works!!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

There was a drought in Indiana last summer. Whenever we went camping with our Beagles, we always used the Swamp Cooler jackets. On our last camping trip, I just stuffed the jackets in a plastic bag (they were all dry) and I forgot about them until last week when I was checking out our camper. I opened the bag and boy did they ever stink. I threw them in the washer and dryer on the gentle cycle and both of them came out great. No more smells and no more dirt. I really like the way they clip under the body to keep the chest cool. That is very important. When we go hiking, we carry extra water to pour on the girls to keep them cool.

We kick up our paws in: Fairfax, VA

My canine companion(s): Vizsla

Works Great

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I routinely take him running with me and before getting the vest I'd be dragging my vizsla behind me by the end of the run (which is saying something because he's much more of an athlete than me), and as soon as we'd get back to the car he'd drink a ton of water. After I got this he's pulling me along like he does in cooler months and barely drinks anything after the run. It looks a little dorky and you'll get some dirty looks from people wondering why you have a dog wearing a coat in the summer, but it's well worth it!
