Amaz-az-azing!!!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

This is the perfect leash for dogs who are constantly on the go with their humans! The short handle is at exactly the perfect length for a tall dog like a dobie on walks in town, but the elasticity and length of the full leash when worn around the waist is ideal for running and hikes. My only complaint is that there is not a larger waist size available, because while I can wear the leash loosely around my hips it's pretty tight on a big guy. All in all, though, we love this leash!

fantastic

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I took my 7 month old, newly adopted Heeler girl out for her first run today, a nice 10 mile meandering sigle track, with the Romer leash and honestly, I was so STOKED how well it worked. The hands off waist belt when worn just tight enough to stay above my hips but loose enough to spin as she switched sides made for a total hassle free run and the elastic allowed her to know when to stay close with no jerks or jolts (to her or me;-). The shorter length was perfect for us as she was able to stay out of my feet while keeping the leash off the ground. The top rope collar, roamer combo is perfect. Thanks for making the best "friend gear" on the planet!! Cheers

Great!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Purchased this leash the other day for running with my dog. This has saved my back! He still pulls if he sees something more exciting (like a squirrel) however I no longer have to remember to switch hands holding the leash to alter the strain on my shoulders. Now I can just focus on running. Great product.

Cool Idea, less cool material.

Would you recommend this product?.: No

I bought this leash today, drove home and put it on the new harness I bought for my boy too. We've been running 4 miles a day and I wanted something a little easier for me. I walk outside with it hooked to him we run about 100 meters before he pulls too quickly and the cheap plastic clip breaks off.. I'm going to try to attach one of those metal clip things to it and see if that would make it more durable.. Not impressed with the quality.. A leash designed for running a big dog should be made with more than cheap plastic.

Perfect!

This leash is absolutely the best one I have ever used. It's perfect for walking, hiking, and snowshoeing. Our dog isn't trustworthy off-leash, but this long, extending leash does give him some freedom. I love that it can be worn comfortably around my waist or used as a regular leash. The only problem is that it isn't great for city traffic as you have to hold onto it about halfway down so that the dog doesn't get out too far. All in all, it's perfect for those outings where your dog can wander a bit more than a regular leash and this has become our everyday leash!

I really like these leashes for hiking, skijoring, abd biking with the dogs. The waist attachment is great and saves wear and tear on my arm (esp. w/4 big pullers attached). My only complaint is the bungee wears out quickly to the point wear it no longer absorbs the shock. Otherwise it's a really well thought out product.

Love It

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

We adopted Athena (Dane) at the very playful age of 15 mos. As we do not have a fenced area, we do have acreage for her to explore. Since I was not ready to start off leash training I thought this leash would be good for giving her some space. It has been the best leash I have ever used. When we walk it lets her get ahead without injuring/choking herself. We use it for running as well. This leash has just the right amount of give and it has made her a much better walker/runner.

Too long!

Would you recommend this product?.: No

My last dog used a Roamer leash, so I got another one. But it's just too long. When he runs by my side the leash drags on the ground, and when he stretches out the bungee he's able to leave the sidewalk and get out into the street. I'd like to see the 1" webbing used in a shorter leash, that would be both strong and safe.

Great

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I have to say I love the roamer leash. I can either walk or run with my dog and she loves the feeling of certain freedom. My favourite thing about it is that is goes around my hips (keeping my doggie controlled) and it also has the loopie close to the dog when I need a short leash to cross the streets. I have bought several for my friends and they all LOVE IT!

Date of Review: 11/1/2012

We kick up our paws in: Kansas

My canine companion(s): Treeing Walker Coonhound

Highly Disappointed

Would you recommend this product?.: No

I was very excited to find a hands free leash to use on my dog when we hike or walk in open areas. I read many of the comments and most were positive except for the clip on the leash. When I got the leash (after it came 2/3 of the way here than went all the way back to OR where it came from) I immediately tried it out but came to realize that the belt for me was tiny! Now, it is adjustable but by the time I got the belt around me, my dog had lost almost 3 foot of leash! And I am not a large person by any means but I did need about 34-36" of belt to be comfortable. When using this leash, the owner has almost zero control over their dog due to the bungee. If my dog had wandered into the street it would have been almost impossible to pull her back quickly. And the funky lobster like clip makes me very nervous. My dog could pull on it the wrong way and it would come open. Belt is not too comfortable either. Overall weight of the belt and leash is quite heavy. A small dog would be weighed down. Scarlett is 75 lbs and I thought it was heavy even for her. Great concept but poor execution. I do not believe Ruffwear tested this product on different sizes of dogs before producing it. Traffic handle was a great idea though.

Even though I don't think of myself as an extremely large person, I found that the waist loop was just barely large enough for my hips, where I would be most comfortable wearing it. I solved my problem by buying a Hoopie Collar from Ruffwear and using it as an extender (same clasps, same color and width). Now, it's perfect!

One of THE best leashes I have ever used. It gives me the comfort on days when my body is not cooperating to be handsfree with my service dog and it gives him a bit more freedom while going potty AWAY from me. The traffic lead part close to the leash hook is AWESOME!

Nice hands free leash and safe for the bolters!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I really do only use these leashes since I've had too many incidents where the dog (foster) has pulled the leash out of my hand. They are great for taking the dog on a Springer next to the bike. The only issue I have with them is that the bungie part stretches out and looses it's elasticity too quickly. I have plenty of these leashes that and super long because of that!

Durable, Perfect for hiking or trail running

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Got this about a month ago, and I'm so glad I did. My 85 lb. Great Dane/Black Lab mix loves to stop and sniff around when hiking, and when trail running there's always certain parts that he needs more time and space to maneuver in. This leash prevents jolting, gives you a warning through increased leash tension when your dog starts falling behind, and lets them roam a good distance while still being able to maintain positive control. I love the traffic handle feature, it's perfect for when a trail gets crowded with people coming the opposite direction, you can just call your dog over and hold on to it. After a month of fairly vigorous use, it still looks like I just got it the other day.

Good quality, very reliable

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I love running hands free with this leash. The clasp on the collar is very sturdy and safe. I had to get accustomed to the bungee, but prefer it to a flat leash because it keeps me from tripping over it. My 45 pound dog runs all over the place in front of me and this is great for that. The only reason I am replacing my old one is that Whit has almost chewed through both sides of the leash. She is a show-off when we pass other dogs and runs with the leash in her mouth. I have been running with this for a year and it has held up this long. It is double duty with two sides going from the bungee to the collar. My dog just grinds her teeth on it and it is frayed. I am buying two replacements just in case. Definitely worth it!

We love running!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

This leash is awesome for our running adventures and leaves my hands free for my water and whatever else I may need them for. Also keeps me centered instead of him pulling on my one arm, he pulls my waist and keeps my pace on track. I love this leash, but just make sure you have control over your dog because it doesn't offer much if he lunges at something you don't want him to due to the bungee. That's why we have been training ourselves when the cars go by.

Excellent for Roaming

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I used this for our hiking trip and it worked great gave the dog room to explore. Was most useful when scrambling up short cliffs my hands could be free and dog could go at his own pace. I am also finding it useful with the foster dogs to have them stay near me in the house. Only item is that the Large is a bit too long for using on sidewalks walking to trails so I do not use it unless we have a longer hike planned

This is the best leash from running. I bought 2 of these leases and have never had such an enjoyable experience running. I have to run on the road before I hit the woods and can take the dogs off their leashes and it has always been a struggle with their normal leashes and having them tug to go smell something. Being able to have the roamer leash around my waist and not tug back against them is amazing. The elastic core also helps so the dogs are not tripping over their leash!

THE BEST

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

This is by far the best leash in the world - extremely durable, comfortable to have around the waist or to unclip and hold like a regular leash, and plenty of room for my dog to explore the close area but strong enough to pull him back when he "roams" too far. Absolutely amazing product - all Ruffwear products are OUTSTANDING!!!

Awesome!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

This leash is everything I thought it would be. I bought it for my chihuahua/dachshund service dog, because since we are together so much its easier for me to have a hands free leash! The leash is pretty heavy duty which took a little getting used to for my 11 pound girl. I have experimented with clipping my end all sorts of different ways and prefer wearing it clipped across my chest because it allows the leash to sit higher, since she's so low to the ground. I will be getting her boyfriend, Dexter, a Shibu Inu service dog, one as well, and I know plenty of other service dog owners who have been searching for the answer of how to carry the leash and groceries!

Good product

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

We have been using this leash for years, have bought 6 of them. Love the "roaming" room it allows for my big dogs. Only problem is the clip has broken several times from my ridgeback who pulls a bunch, so we usually have to replace it with a stronger one from the hardware store. The Roamer Leash has been the perfect solution for walking my dog who loves to keep his nose to the ground. The expansion allows for him to feel the end of his free range unlike the Flexi which he has pulled out of my hand on several occassions. I would have given it a five star rating but the clip, which must be an older model because it is different than the clip shown, broke. I was able to replace it with a new one from a local hardware store. My second Roamer Leash has a heaver version of the clip which is different from the one shown.

I want to thank you for ALL of your products! We've been buying Ruffwear for years for our Husky/GSD girl, and our Husky/GSD/Lab girl! But today, I want to thank you for the leash we bought - our younger dog PULLS like a draft horse on our walks no matter what harness we have her in - we've tried EVERYTHING and NOTHING works. I work with my hands and have wrist problems anyway - her pulling just exacerbates that, and I DREAD our twice-daily walks. We got one of your ROAMER leashes and I wore it around my waist - NO more pulling, and I can walk this dog ALL day with no complaints!~I am going to buy a second for our other dog, and will be telling EVERYONE about you! THANK YOU!

This lead is great for exploring. It allows my dog more freedom than a normal lead, but you still have enough control - even at roadsides if you hold it short enough to reduce the amount of bungee. It's not a training lead though, so I wouldn't recommend it if your dog is still learning to walk nicely at your side. I was worried that the talon clip may be too big and heavy for my little dog, but it is not - I weighed the clip and it is no heavier than the one on my normal lead, with the bonus that it is much easier to clip on and off.

I'm going to take 2 stars away because of the plastic clasp used to attach the leash to your waist. I have lots of RuffWear products and have come to expect never-fail sturdiness. The thin plastic clasp does not inspire confidence. Maybe it's fine if you have a small dog, but if you're running with an 80 pound Lab that's known to stop and bolt after squirrels, I always worry that the clasp will fail. A good aluminum clasp instead of thin plastic would be a great product upgrade. I hope RuffWear will consider doing so. I would recommend this leash only after telling a potential buyer of my concerns.

This leash is great ~ it will expand out, allowing your dog to move out and check things out, but it gradually gets taught, allowing them forwarning prior to hitting the end of the lead. Loop at human end is great for tying up or tying to human. Worth it! Hardware is unique and works great.

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I wish to modify my earlier review called "Use with Extreme Caution". The Talon clip was not working well for us (see above post) as it kept coming undone and dogs were getting loose. Upon calling RuffWear with this problem, we were able to get two locking carabiner clips sent to us. My husband used a hack saw to get the Talon clip off and we now use the locking carabiner. Now VERY secure and we are quite happy! Thank you RuffWear for your excellent customer service!

Love the bungie aspect of the leash as they can snif and be dogs on our walks, but the Talon clip has come loose more than once. The ring on their collars gets between the seams on the Talon Clip and forces it open. Get a locking carabiner instead for total security.

Comfortable and Functional on trail

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I love this leash for trail running, hiking and multiple dog walking - we foster, and it's great to have our well mannered walker on the waist leash and devote hands to the often less-well-behaved transient. If I had one change, I would have a shorter option... this is perfect for the back-country user (which I know is the intended audience), but for in-town use, both leashes exceed the standard town ordinance length of 6'. The elastic aspect of it is especially nice, as it allows for gentle reminder of length limit without jarring you/the dog when the limit is reached. This is a favorite, for sure!

Love my Roamer Leash! Definitely nice if you want to let your dog have more room to sniff around, but can't let them off leash completely. Hiking and Running/Walking with this is excellent because of the give it has and the room in the handle to put it around your waist. I use it for walking the dogs with the kids. It leaves my hands free to wrangle small children and I can bring the dogs along too. Only issue with mine has been that it got pinched in a joint of some play equipment and frayed.

Great Idea but Not Secure

Would you recommend this product?.: No

I love the idea of this product, especially for my dog who can't be off leash (no recall) it gives her a bit more 'roaming' room in the woods. The leash itself is solidly built but the clasp is not as secure as I'd like. Within 10 minutes of heading out on our walk this morning the clasp had come undone and my dog was roaming with no leash...scary for someone with a dog that doesn't come when she's called. I have ended up subbing in a locking carabiner for the Talon Clip.

Just got back from our first weekend in VT with the Roamer! Perfect for Taz hiking/running/ hanging around the campsite. Our dog is not reliable off leash and this was the perfect solution for him! It was great for hiking...gave him some flex to sniff and left our hands free to manage scrambling down trails. Love it for running too. And it's perfect to clip to a picnic table or porch railing. And RUFFWEAR, thank you so much for swapping in the Talon Clip. Makes a huge difference 'cause if Taz came unclipped off his leash, he'd be gone in a heartbeat!

The 3' of "play" in the Roamer Leash has allowed me to keep working my K9 (and taking him for leisure walks!) without any further injury or pain. It has just enough "spring" that he is not able to jerk my arm without warning when he gets on odor. I would highly recommend this to anyone with similar shoulder/arm issues.

Except for the few dog parks, there is really no where to legally let your dog off leash around here. The roamer leash is the next best thing! I don't use it walking around the city, but I clip it onto my pup's harness when we are hiking in the hills. For my small dog, it's great! No jerking at the end of the leash to investigate that plant, and if we run around a bit and he takes off twice as fast as me, he gently reaches the end of the leash and slows down.
