new one - poor. old one - great.

Would you recommend this product?.: No

I had bought 6 or 7 of the previous version of this leash, mainly because I kept "losing" them to my friends who loved the clip and strength of the leash. Now, after buying one of the new ones, I'm going to ask my friends for my old ones back! The new Talon Hook, quite simply, sucks. RuffWear: the whole point of these reviews and forums is to provide you with feedback. Please listen to your repeat customers and bring back the old leash style. I'd even pay a few dollars more, rather than paying anything at all for the new version of the FlatOut Leash. (And bring back the orange color, Klik Kat, or whatever it was called...)

Accident waiting to happen. Bring back the old plastic clip!

Would you recommend this product?.: No

Normally I would give this product a 5-star rating. I have the older version of this leash, and I use it every day. I love the fact that you can put it around your waist (great for training when you need hands free to reward your dog with treats, great for running). And I also love the built in traffic lead -- comes in very handy when you need to suddenly get control over your dog (running into an unfriendly dog, walking on a busy road, etc). However, the newest version of this leash with the talon clip is downright dangerous!! The talon clip is NOT easy to unhook quickly (or even slowly for that matter), as in the case of an emergency. Whereas the old plastic clips you could undue in a millisecond, if needed. If I have a leash attached to my waist with a 80lb dog on the other end, I want to be able to sever the connection in an instant in an emergency situation! Not being able to do so could put you at serious rick of getting gravely injured. While I LOVE my old generation flat out leash, I would NOT recommend using this newer generation product around your waist. It is just an accident waiting to happen -- downright unsafe for the handler (and the dog)!

Good, not great

Would you recommend this product?.: No

I bought this leash because I had a previous version of it. My favorite feature was the clip on the handle, and I also really like the second handle close to the dog's neck. It is a strong leash (though strong chewers will get through it if they try). Also, I am very disappointed in the change to the Talon Hook. It is very difficult to open and close it. I really miss the clip and hope you bring it back. Otherwise, I have no reason to spend a premium on this leash

The new aluminum Talon Hook on your products "SUCK" Read the reviews..We use Flat Out Leash for around neighborhood and Roamer Leash for hiking. I can't stand around fiddling with the aluminum Talon Hook trying to get it open/closed. The older model side-release buckle was fast i didn't even have to stop moving to open/close clip

Great leash

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I love how light this leash is. It's seems quite strong (Cody's 100 lbs.) but the handle is very comfortable and the clip is easy to attach. I bought a matching collar. The set makes him look great too!

Great

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I love the clip on this leash. Its one of the few that my dog can't shake his way out of. I am a little disappointed by the change in the hook at the top of the leash though. I had the older model with a heavy duty plastic clasp and that was so easy to use! The metal on this one is really hard to do if I am going to hook the leash onto something.

Perfect leash for an active dog

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

Talon clip makes the leash a breeze to get on and off an excited, squirming dog. Handle is very comfortable. Very durable leash - dog hasn't been able to chew through it yet (we had that problem with other leashes). The handle makes looping it to chairs at sidewalk cafés very easy. Definitely worth the money, this is the best leash out there in my opinion. Wish they had a slightly longer version though - when it's worn around the waist it gets pretty short. But other than that we love it!

Love it!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

The clasp on this is much higher quality than her old leash, and easier to manipulate. The clasp hardware is big, though, and she doesn't like it hitting her in the chest (we use a front-clasp harness) - fixed by double-clipping to her collar. I wish the hand loop were easier to unhook for getting it around my waist. Now I just expand it big enough for me to step in, pull it up and tighten.

Not great

Would you recommend this product?.: No

We ordered a flat out leash to match River's head water collar. Based on our experience over the past year (using a black previous design flat line) we were expecting much higher quality. The new version is very light weight and didn't make it through our first car ride to the park. River got a hold of the leash in the backseat for less that a min and chewed through the leash just above the clasp. I don't expect any leash to stand up to much chewing, but last years model is still going strong. The other issue I had with this leash is the change from a clip to a hook. The clip is much easier to use from the previous design.

Not great.

Would you recommend this product?.: No

I LOVED this leash until today when the leash slipped out of the metal clip and my dog amost ran away! Not sure what happend, but over time (not even a month!) the fabric must have stretched and now it won't stay in the clip. It fell out twice during our run today. I don't trust using it anymore and will be switching to a leash that has a plastic clip.

Well Made, but no buckle

Would you recommend this product?.: No

All leashes my dogs have are Ruff Wear because they have a buckle at the handle that is easy to open and close. This leash has a loop that is next to impossible to disconnect. I am not able to use it like older models. I hope that Ruff wear will go back to easy to use buckles that allow attaching leashes to each other, to a belt, a tree etc.

Very happy!

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

I have been very pleased so far. The material is lightweight and durable. Mud just comes right off when it is dry. I would agree that the leash is a little short for running and hiking but for walking, it is great. The clasp is also easy to attach when you have a very excited dog.

Great... but not for running! Too short.

Would you recommend this product?.: No

I checked 'No' because I am not recommending this for running ... for hiking, or walking, yes I would recommend this. My primary use is to have a safe, light-weight, unabtrusive method of going on 'full-out' full-stride long-distance runs with my dog who ... loves to run (Marley and I run together 5 days per week 5 to 11 miles a day on average - the other two days I try to join my running group). I took the Flat-Out Leash on an test run with Marley this morning and found that it extended/connected to his harness perfectly. On the warm-up mile I could already see that in my three-quarter stride there were going to be potential 'dog under foot' issues. When I cranked up the speed after the warm up I felt I was constantly in-check that I was coming dangerously close to the back of his hind limbs. This made me feel as if I needed to back off from going into a full stride which made for an uncomfortable run. The other unfortunate thing about entering full-stride with this well constructed, light-weight, comfortable leash was that in full-stride it felt as if Marley was getting pulled up a bit by his harness as I was in the toe-off and takeoff portion of my gait cycle, which never let Marley get into his beautiful running gait cycle (we're in tune with each other). I think if Ruffwear could do a slight redesign -- three to five inch additional length -- on this model and specifically market it to runners, they will really be on to something!

ok

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

like the leash- works like a leash-only bummer is they changed the handhold, use to have a buckle for quick tying to a object and now its the Talon hook which i don't find as user friendly. Have to manipulate a bit more to undo to clasp around post versus a quick snap and bucke. not a huge deal, but when handling two dogs and getting situated, it was nicer having the quicker release system. Otherwise, like the leash(es) fine.

I love that you can hook this leash on your waist. It keeps your hands free for running or working. Super strong leash. Love the traffic handle to keep my dog close when I need to. The talon clip is better than I thought it would be. I just wish this product had some reflective strip or something.

Great leash. The one handed clip works pretty good. It sometimes spis in the hand, but get your fingers right, and it makes clipping in easy. The short handle is nice when you want to bring the dog in close. Nice range of colors and styles too.

Excellent product; love the new designs/patterns. Scooter has a minor complaint--at 30lbs with a smaller frame, the clip is a bit large. Even though it's light, it makes the leash impractical for him when we go for a run.

This a great leash. Very versatile with the handle sliding to also be a waist belt for hands free walking. It works well for running too and keeps your dog close to your side. It is also much lighter than I expected which is great for backpacking and adventuresome dogs. Even though it is light it still feels very well made and should last a long time.

I always thought the leash around-the-waist thing was sort of dorky, until I tried the Flat-Out Leash. AMAZING. Hands down, the most revolutionary dog-walking invention. The flat webbing doesn't easily tangle, the clasp is super simple and easy to use and the short-leash handle comes in handy when squirrels and bunnies are around!

Liked the older clip better

Would you recommend this product?.: Yes!

We recently purchased our 2nd flat out leash because my daughter loved the flowers for her service dog. I really wish that the clip hadn't changed. We won't let her wear it around her waist because it's not easy to release in an emergency now with the metal slide clip. My daughter is 5 and her service dog is twice her weight.

I might have a bit of a leash problem like some women have with shoes...BUT isn't a leash one of the most important and valuable tools a dog owner has?!! I like the waist clip on this new version of the Flat Out. It is easy to use and adjust. I find it much easier to adjust than the plastic clip from previous years. This leash is great for hands-free walking and running, will use for hiking too. Easily hooks to my dog's collar, harness, or pack. I love that there are always new colors/patterns too. Makes it easier to justify the purchase of a new one (to my husband) since my old ones never seem to wear out (just like shoes)!

Great, but didn't last long.

I loved this leash when I got it! However, I'm only giving it 4 stars because mine recently broke. The clasp on it stopped opening and closing, its just kind of loose and doesn't have any spring anymore. I've had this leash since July, I'm sad I did not get a second summer with it :( Loved that you could clip it around your waist, great for being hands free on our hikes.
